Thats a great idea and all, but what about the students that do well because of athletics. There is a lot of kids, particularly ones that do not have a good home life that do well in school only so they can participate in athletics. Also, IMO a really big reason to hold a kid back is the maturity level of some kids.

Maturity...I would assume that this would be an issue not just for athletes, right? We'd see some academic team members, band members, and average joes being "held back."

I can remember 3 or 4 students I went to school with who got held back and did not participate in athletics. Obviously athletics is a huge reason why students do get held back, but its not the only reason. I can't understand the criticism of it and I don't guess I ever will. The only situation I could see being criticized is if you have a straight A student who needs to go on and be challenged academically.

I will admit that this isn't exclusive to EKy having a "child" repeat a grade, but an entire sixth grade basketball team?

The board of education does not determine who is "held back" for non-academic reasons. Policy is made by the Site Based Council and School Boards, but parents have the ultimate say in the matter.

Don't be fooled. They were all held back for athletic reasons. This really hurts the kids whose parents choose not to hold their kids back. Those kids are now competing with kids 1 and 2 years older than them but in the same grade. They are not only competing for athletic scholarships but also academic scholarships with kids who have repeated 1 or 2 grades.

Why does anyone care? It's a parential decision, if the parents think its is best then so be it.

 

What is interesting is some of the posters in this thread believe a parent has a right to choose whether the child is even born but shouldn't have the right to choose if said child should repeat a grade.

I'm sure you are correct, academics probably were not the issue. Trust me on this in 2 or 3 years it won't matter. The age difference now has an effect but it will go away in time.

The past is the past. Perhaps folks are interested in this years team. Don't see any of them getting any eligibility back anytime soon.:sssh::ohbrother:

For the record the same kids won the region for 3 years.
