How is Magoffin County ranked # 7. They have only played 1A and 2A schools. It is possible that they could end up 3rd or 4th in their district.

At some point in time, you have to consider a team that wins games. A lot of 3A teams can't make that claim - against even a 1A/2A schedule!

Why should you have to consider any team that plays such a crappy schedule? Just because they've found some teams they can beat doesn't mean they deserve a ranking.

I'm not saying Magoffin's worthy...but they are worthy of a close eye until someone knocks them down...

They're worthy of a close eye when they play with someone that's actually good.

I didn't mean for it to sound like I was dissing Magoffin's football team. They are 5-1 and that is great. I was just making a comment on how the AP polls are ranked.

 

I knew why they were ranked #7. Their record. Good luck the rest of the season.

This is what is so scary about the AP poll:

 

Magoffin County is ranked seventh in Class 3A. They lost to Paintsville, a Class A team with a losing record, and have two close wins over teams with a combined record of 2-10.

 

Their six opponents are a combined 8-28, and three of those wins came against each other, which means they're an even-worse 5-25 against outside competition.

 

What's truly scary is that several voters saw Magoffin's resume and thought it was worthy of a top-10 ranking.

No idea. I don't think they've decided yet, but I haven't paid too much attention to that part. Of course, I don't even know what the original South Warren mascot or colors were, so I guess I wouldn't know the difference. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go with Bulldogs as a nod to the local elementary school in that community (Richpond).

They sould beat Powell this week. They have two tough home games the next 2. Seems Breathitt maye have things clicking after last game and Estills young team also has found a little swager and is playing well.

You have to consider ALL teams, regardless of their schedule. Losing to a bunch of good teams doesn't make you good. An 0-5 team may be the sixth-best team in the state - or they may just be a lousy team. Playing the top five ranked teams in the state doesn't make them good.

 

Nor does playing a poor schedule make you bad. The kids just play the teams put in front of them. It's up to the voters to discriminate as to whether or not they deserve ranking.

 

You have to look much deeper than just SOS. SOS can prove certain things, but not all things. It's not your schedule so much as it is the way you play against that schedule.

You eliminate a lot of awfully good teams that way.

You're not understanding my point.

 

It's not just the strength of schedule, but what you do against it.

 

Magoffin's schedule is horrible, and they haven't done a whole lot with it.

 

Not every 5-1 team is good ... sometimes, it means they were able to schedule five teams they could beat.

Magoffin has seen westsider's post and have added Flaget and Lynch to next year's schedule to beef it up some.
