I wonder how Jordan Streeter felt after the game, considering he transferred from Cincinnati St. Xavier to Highlands.

I thought I'd let the initial excitement slow down a bit before posting my thoughts on the game.

 

Now, let me preface this by saying two things:

1) I predicted a St. Xavier blowout

2) I only saw the second half

 

First off, Congratulations to Highlands. It was a tremendous win over a very, very good football team. And I'm not just saying that because St. X beat Colerain. My Cardinals are not very good this year. First time in a long time they aren't State Tourny quality. I am saying it because St. Xavier is always well prepared with smart, football savvy kids who never quit and never believe they are going to lose.

 

Secondly...not too many times am I speechless while watching a game but I was on Friday night. I was sitting at home, on my couch, watching St. Xavier look like a JV team. I can't understand for the life of me who that team was or why they were wearing St. Xavier uniforms. They looked out of sync. They were outplayed which is something that just doesn't happen to St. Xavier...ever.

 

Thirdly...make no mistake, this was one of those games that meant EVERYTHING to Highlands and, truth be told, meant not nearly as much to St. Xavier. Sure, they wanted to win, but in the end, it really didn't matter. They are going to cruise to the #1 seed in the playoffs even with this loss and maybe even with 2 losses. That's not to say they didn't want to win, but clearly Highlands wanted it more. And that's a good thing for Highlands.

 

Fourth...the loss of Bardo is HUGE. I know it could happen against anyone, but it didn't. It happened against a team that Highlands didn't need to play and now, could it cost them a state title? Rumor has it he is done for the year. If that's so, can't see Highlands having enough to win without him. That kid was the entire offensive game plan for the Bluebirds.

 

Finally...I am glad Colerain got Highlands last year and not this year! I would have hated being the Cincy D1 power to finally lose to the Bluebirds. :notworthy:

 

Good luck the rest of the way and I hope #19 or #20 or whichever one it is now, makes it's way back to Ft. Thomas.

But keep in mind that there won't be a team in 5A that is half as good as Saint X is... Highlands' offense struggled some against Saint X but that won't be the case against the Class 5A competition. Plus, Highlands' back-up QB, while young, is actually pretty good, and he has a ton of weapons: a great offensive line, great receiving corps, Collinsworth, Fennell and Streeter in the backfield, plus (as we saw last night) a great defense!

But keep in mind that there won't be a team in 5A that is half as good as Saint X is... Highlands' offense struggled some against Saint X but that won't be the case against the Class 5A competition. Plus, Highlands' back-up QB, while young, is actually pretty good, and he has a ton of weapons: a great offensive line, great receiving corps, Collinsworth, Fennell and Streeter in the backfield, plus (as we saw last night) a great defense!

Bowling green isn't HALF as good as X? They got 1st place votes in the AP poll, someone thinks they are pretty good.

Would that be the same AP poll that had Louisville Male ranked first in Class 6A when they got beat by 40+ by Louisville Saint X????

The way I see it, almost everyone on here was sure that St. X was going to throw a beat down on Highlands, even most of the die hard Highland fans had a different tone in their posts. I am sure St. X though they were going to win after beating Trinity and Louisville St. X. But, the Highland coaches and players still believed they were going to win, and did.

 

As for rankings: they mean nothing when two teams line up, and national rankings are a waste of time. So, if you're going to base your predictions on rankings, you are going to be disappointed a lot.

Bardo is great but keep in mind that was the first game he was really the offensive game plan for the Birds and they came in 5-0 against some decent teams. If the defense maintains the intensity they showed last night we'll have enough offense to be ok.

You don't have to say it in the locker room for it to be true. Sure those X kids wanted to win but losing, honestly, isn't going to make or break their season. Nor should it Highlands. It's one regular season contest. St. Xavier will be much more amped next week against Elder. Winning the GCL is something that means more to those nut-jobs than anything, honestly.

Every game is important to HHS. It's just that this had added significance. If you don't believe that, then WOW! :eek: And I wouldn't be asking to compare how long we've been around. That's not a winning proposition.

Will Bardo is definitely a great athlete and team leader, and obviously he is the Bluebirds' first choice for QB, given that he has been the starter. But in football injuries happen and good teams learn to deal with them.

 

Consider that last season Highlands lost their star RB (who was being talked about for Mr. Kentucky Football) Josh Conner, in a preseason scrimmage no less, and although he returned late in the season, he was never the same player he was as a junior, AND Highlands' TE/LB Brandon Roller (who played both ways, unlike this year) blew out his knee early in the playoffs and was out for the last three games of the playoffs, and STILL Highlands won the state title... this team will do what needs to be done to bring home the state title.

 

And CF, you know I love you... you are by far my favorite Ohio-based prep football fan! Also, we KY prep football supporters realize that you are very fair and even-handed when talking about our teams on the Ohio prep sports sites! Best wishes to Colerain for the rest of the year and congrats on the big win this past Thursday!

I'm not saying that Highlands can't be beaten by a 5A team, but I am saying that Highlands won't be held to 12 points by a 5A team this year. I think you'd admit that's probably a fair assessment.

The loss of Bardo would be huge. Highlands still has enough to go all the way but he is probably the one guy they don't have someone who can step in. If AC goes down they have 3-4 other backs. The Towels kid is talented but he is young and his accuracy against Boone was not good to say it politely.

 

Most of the Cincy teams probably can't hang with Highlands overall team speed maybe minus Colerain. It would probably take someone like Colerain or a Glenville to out run them.
