AP Poll Week September 21

Yes I would. When do they play?

This friday at Trinity. If BG beats Trinity then I think it'll be a huge statement for the purples. Other than winning state what more would they have to prove? Im just thinking out loud here...

I know you said Highlands is obvious and I completely agree with you, but what if Bowling Green beats Trinity? Won't they deserve first place?:idunno:
Not even close. A win against this year's Trinity squad wouldn't carry the same weight as it might have in years past.

I would say any time a state school (non-St. X) goes to Trinity and wins it will carry a ton of weight. This year, last year, or any year in the future.

We at McCreary Central are very proud to be 4-0. It's the first time to get off to that kind of start. We may not win this week but we have put ourselfs in a position to win.

If they played tomorrow I would pick Trinity over Highlands. I have seen Highlands. I have not seen Trinity.

For many years everyone in the state have had to listen while Trinity and Highlands have shouted to the world WE ARE THE GREATEST! Please, I will drive anywere in the state to watch this game as well most football fans would.

No, Trinity is way down this year, by their own admission. So it would not make sense to rank BG over Highlands, simply because they defeated a weakened Trinity team.
I like LCA as #1 in 1A but I do think Mayfield at this point should get a few votes as a #1. Mayfield has played a very decent schedule beating a Tenn. #1 team in its 1A division. I know very little about LCA except what I read here and that they have beaten teams very soundly and at this point they should be the #1 team. I don't agree with what most on this board are saying about Beechwood still being the team to beat. I read how they don't quite have the line play as in years past and there not just losing but losing big. Time will give up the answers but I believe you're looking most likely at a LCA vs Mayfield final.

I have not seen LCA play or who is on their schedule, but I wonder if it compares to Beechwoods. Dixie, CovCath, Highlands are all 5A schools that one would expect to beat Beechwood. In years past, the Tigers have been able to compete and beat some of those schools. While they're down compared to previous years, my guess is the usual BIG GAP between Beechwood and the other 1A schools is a little less of a gap this year. But they'll still be in the title hunt.

What if BG beats Trinity and Highlands beats Cincy St X? Where do the votes go then?

I know, I know, that is one big IF

I didn't necessarily say rank them over Highlands, but I did say a win at Trinity would carry a ton of weight. Very similar to when SEC basketball teams win a Rupp Arena; it may not be the best UK team, but it's still a big win for the opponent and it usually counts for something.

See, I don't think it's THAT cut and dry.

1A LCA is a good #1. Beechwood has most likely played the tougher schedule however.

2A Ft Campbell deserves it because they are defending champs and unbeaten and looked great doing it. However, Corbin is no slouch and has looked equally impressive in maybe a better schedule. (Can't really gauge the TN schools well without background on them)

3A Is wide open like you said.

4A While Boyle is obvious to most, Bell deserves any #1 vote they get. THEY are the defending state champs. Their only loss was to a very good Alcoa squad from TN. So any vote for Bell seems reasonable to me.

5A Highlands is obvious

6A St. Xavier is likewise. However let's wait until they play Trinity and see what Henry Clay does as the year progresses.

Im gonna have to disagree with you in some of these and back up my original thoughts.

1. Beechwood has played the tougher schedule, sure, but they have also been beat by 40, 28 and 29 while playing that schedule. I dont care who you are playing, if you lose 3 games by a combined 97 points then you dont deserve any 1st place votes.

2. Corbin has played a tougher schedule huh? The combined records of their opponents is 6-12. 3 of the teams only have 1 victory. As for the Tenn teams, I dont know anything about them either. All I know is the 1st one they played(Christ Pres) played LCA to a 1-point game?

3. Bell Co and Boyle have played 1 like opponent, Johnson Central. Boyle won 49-7, Bell won 36-6. I would say Boyle has the most impressive and toughest victory out of the 2 teams with their win vs. Rockcastle. Bell has not beat a good team and Boyle has beat 1.

4. Im sure St. X will beat Trinity when it doesnt count? Come December though, Beatty just seems to have Glaser's number? Henry Clay, Bryan Station, Male, Manual, Fern Creek, Simon Kenton: theyre all playing for 3rd like the public schools always do and always will until something is changed.

I still believe Whitley Co. is a good team even after losing to Belfry. They had LexCath beat, but fell apart late in the game.

That poll is bizarre. Who votes on these things? Media?

Associated Press subscriber outlets are afforded a vote. The AP is expensive, so it's generally only daily papers (of which there are only about 20 or so, in larger towns), as well as some radio and TV stations.

It would not make sense to rank any team over another team based on an uncommon opponent. But to assume that Trinity is down would be crazy. They have yet to have a down team under the Beatty era and the odds are that they will be okay come mid November. And if some team where to walk in and beat T, allow their opponent to enjoy the win and have some pride.

Good responses. :thumb:

FWIW, I wasn't say give Beechwood #1, just until the are defeated in November, you can't count them out.

As to the Corbin schedule, I'm not Corbin apologist by any means. However I think their 6-12 opponents probably are about the same record as the teams that Ft Campbell have played. I still wouldn't replace Ft Campbell, just responding to the notion that it isn't all wrapped up.

Same is true for Boyle and Bell. The JC games were similar for both and there's a lot of football to be played for both yet.

As far as Trinity is concerned, see my response about Beechwood.

Good to hear from someone else's critique. :thumb:

IMO a team who won the State Championship in the previous year and is undefeated in the current year should be ranked #1 in that class baring extraordinary circumstances. Using 2A as an example, maybe if NCC were undefeated against teams like Dixie, SK, and Ryle I could see enough voters voting for them over Fort Campbell, but I don’t believe Corbin’s schedule has been that significantly harder compared to FCs.
