Some exciting news!

I'd take the ACT as a 7th-grader because it is a more difficult test in terms of stamina (merely because, relative to the SAT, the sections are not broken up as frequently) and therefore when he takes it in high school, he will know what to expect. The SAT (which, FWIW, seems to matter a lot less in the South relative to the North) isn't as difficult because everything is broken up into sections that are less than 45 minutes, if I remember correctly.

My son, who has scored pretty well in the ACT, certainly found the SAT to be every bit as tough, if not tougher, than the ACT. We were actually hoping he'd nail the SAT because it does not include science and that is the one area of the ACT in which he struggles, but his ACT-equivalent score on the SAT was only a 27 (they have a chart that compares relative ACT vs. SAT scores).

Our college advisor informs us that both the ACT or SAT are accepted by almost every 4-year institution in the country. Take them both. They are different kinds of tests and perhaps he'll fare better in one than the other. You only have to report the score(s) to colleges that you want.

Nothing wrong with taking the ACT as part of the T.I.P.

Make SURE that he takes the PSAT in the 11th grade. Scoring high enough means National Merit Scholar money - nothing to sneeze at.

I wasn't speaking of content, merely the ways that the tests are set-up, and IMO the ACT is tougher in that respect. (Actually, looking at a chart, I think I scored better on the SAT as well)

Congratulations to little Jonathan. I know you're proud TD. :thumb:

I'd be very proud. Duke is a very top notch college :D

I was involved in this when I was in 7th grade. Tell him congrats. I took the ACT. It was very nerve racking being in their with high schoolers, but it was worth it.

Congrats. I've taken both and I would much rather take the ACT! I didn't care much for the SAT.

TD I know you are so proud of him.:thumb: Congrats to both of you.:ylsuper:

When my daughter took it as a 7th-grader, she sat next to Chris Lofton. That was nerve-racking to her; as she, then as now, thought he was all that.

Congrats. My daughter did it last year. She scored well enough to get state recognition and an invite to the summer programm at Appy State. It is good experience for taking the admissions tests.

Thank you all for your congrats and input. I have decided to sign him up for the ACT. I am worried he will get freaked out being among all those high school kids as well as taking a four hour test.

Anyone want to volunteer to pick him up after the test???:lol::lol:

By the way, I can't believe RP hasn't commented in this thread since I mentioned Duke.:lol:

Maybe if they put a seatbelt on his chair that won't be necessary.
