September 14, 200917 yr I would like to share some good news with my BGP friends. While I am not sure how big of a deal it really is??? I can't help but be proud of him for this accolade.:clap: My younger son has been invited to particpate in the Duke University Talent Identification Program. It is my understanding that this program is offered to 7th graders who are above average in school (in his case Math/Science). While he doesn't think it's a very big deal...I think it's pretty awesome! :ylsuper::ylsuper: I have a question for you all? He has the option to take the ACT or SAT. Which one should he take at this time?

Which one should he take at this time? TD, that's a HUGE deal, and I'm so happy for both of you! My nephew did this, and it has paid off so big for him! I believe he took the ACT, too. I'm not sure when he took the SAT, but I'm pretty sure that in 7th & 8th grade he took the ACT.
September 14, 200917 yr Same here. My son took the test (ACT), scored high enough to get state recognition, and is now teaching at Harvard. You never know.:thumb: Congratuations!!
September 14, 200917 yr Congrats, TD! I did the same thing in 7th grade and got to go to the recognition ceremony at Duke. It was a lot of fun and I didn't realize what a big deal it was until I was older. I took the ACT as a 7th grader and then took the SAT as a sophomore, I believe. Good luck to him!
September 14, 200917 yr The test to take is really based on which schools he might want to attend down the road. Many in the midwest (including KY) take the ACT exam. Others , east coast for example, want SAT.
September 14, 200917 yr I took the SAT when I did this in 7th grade. The ACT is a much easier test in my mind, so that's what I would take if I had it to do over. But Clyde provides some very good advice.
September 14, 200917 yr My nephew was invited to this (or something like it) at Duke when he was in the 4th grade. Not sure if it's the same. In any case, you should definitely be very proud of him. :thumb:

My brother and I both received the invitation for this when we were in school, but for one reason or another decided not to participate. (Stupid I know). I'd take the ACT if he has the choice.
September 14, 200917 yr Author I have had several people tell me he should take the SAT? My first thought was the ACT. Here is more information on the program. http://www.tip.duke.edu/talent_searches/grade_7/?gclid=CO_u-LbU8ZwCFQi_sgodqE78iw Thank you all for the kind words. Like I said he doesn't think it's a big deal but I got his number on this one! See below.:lol::lol: Conversation between us... Me: "Son, I just read through the Duke TIP information. I am very proud of you and I think you should participate in this program." "Jonathan": "Mom, really it's no big deal. A couple kids in my class were also invited to join the program." Me: "Son don't you think that some of the other kids were invited as well because you are all in the advanced program and they have excelled as well?" "Jonathan": "Mom, REALLY it's no big deal and I don't want to take that long test on Saturday in the 7th grade" BUSTED!!!!:lol: Me: No words...just a big smile on my face! :D:D:D:D "Jonathan": "Your going to make me take this test? Aren't you?" Me: "YEP!!!" Jonathan became silent!:laugh::laugh:

September 14, 200917 yr I'd take the ACT as a 7th-grader because it is a more difficult test in terms of stamina (merely because, relative to the SAT, the sections are not broken up as frequently) and therefore when he takes it in high school, he will know what to expect. The SAT (which, FWIW, seems to matter a lot less in the South relative to the North) isn't as difficult because everything is broken up into sections that are less than 45 minutes, if I remember correctly.
September 14, 200917 yr Congratulations! My son also participated in this program. He took the SAT in the seventh grade and the ACT in high school. He is now a sophomore at UK (full ride) majoring in Chem Engineering. Please keep encouraging him. It is a very good program.

September 14, 200917 yr I was selected to take the ACT in seventh grade as well. Basically, I agree with what Clyde is saying as well about which test to take.
