September 10, 200917 yr I don't know about the other generic brands, but as a former Kroger employee, I can tell you that their brands are made by the big name brands. Kroger canned fruits and Veggies = Del Monte Frozen Chicken = Banquet Frozen Fish = Van De Camps Cereal is made by Malt O'Meals, the big name in bagged cereal Jams and jellies = smuckers Peanut butter = Jif Even the Kroger brand milk and other dairy products come from the same production lines as the name brands do. I'm sure this is the same for all retailers. They are not in the production business. They find someone to outsource it to. Kroger takes pride in their brands being good, and therefore they use top of the line companies to produce their products for them. I'm sure they probably change the recipe up on some things, but as long as they are high quality to begin with, canned peaches are canned peaches.
September 10, 200917 yr Really depends on the product. Spag sauce, pasta, milk, bread, beans, basic cheeses are OK, as are most household cleaners and OTC and scrip medical goods. Trash bags and other plastic goods seem excessively cheaply-made. As Neil Young sang: "Tried to save a tree/ bought a plastic bag/ the bottom fell out it was a piece of crap/ PIECE OF CRAP!"
September 10, 200917 yr Dollar Store generic cleaning products here. Not paper products. Equate brand OTC stuff like Ibuprofen, etc.
September 10, 200917 yr On some things we do. It just depend on what it is. I know that on some items the generic brand is made by a name brand company anyway.
September 10, 200917 yr I agree with Royal Uncle - generic brands are made by major food manufactures. Learned this while working for the DFAS Commissary system. I buy some generic food products from Kroger's, Sam's, etc. Just depends on the quality of the product. We no longer buy generic foil because it's not worth it. We do buy Member's Mark trash bag's and M/M canned chicken from Sam's Club.
September 11, 200917 yr Almost all of our groceries are generic. A few things we don't buy generic are clothing, toilet paper, and toiletries.
September 11, 200917 yr Almost all of our groceries are generic. A few things we don't buy generic are clothing, toilet paper, and toiletries. Yeah, toilet paper and paper towels are big exceptions for me, as is soap-type products.
September 11, 200917 yr Liquid anti bacteria hand soap purchased from Target or Walmart are just as good as national brands. Toilet paper and paper towels are an exception.
September 11, 200917 yr One thing I pretty much absolutely refuse to by name brand is clothes, unless I get them at a consignment or thrift store cheap. I did pick up a couple of pairs of Bandolino heels and a pair of Brooks tennis shoes for $7 a pair at the thrift store.
September 11, 200917 yr As I was thinking about this thread, I realized that I never buy anything really. I buy clothes literally once every 6 months, if that often. I buy food normally all generic, from Sam's, or raid my parent's pantry/fridge if they are feeling generous. I'll go weeks at a time without spending a single dime on anything (save gas, utilities, and rent).
September 11, 200917 yr No generic Ketchup, Mayo, batteries, and a few other things. Big K pop is great aside form the "cola" Everything else is game.

September 11, 200917 yr Are you one of my son's No, but if any of your sons' friends tried to raid your pantry, then I may be friends with them
September 11, 200917 yr Food I don't care to buy generic. Household items are a different story though. Name brand toilet paper all the way.
