September 9, 200917 yr Just bought "The Seven Storey Mountain" by Thomas Merton. Can't wait to get into it. Didn't even know about Merton until seeing a KET documentary about him a couple weeks ago. He was a great writer and a unique personality, who spent much of his life as a monk, right here in Kentucky. One of my all-time favorite books. I credit that book as being a big part of bringing me fully into my faith while I was in college. Fantastic read.

September 10, 200917 yr Read Madeline L'Engle's Time Trilogy over the last couple of evenings - picked up the boxed set at a yard sale for a buck. They're geared for teens, but I've always said I'm a young 53. Just started on "Black Order" by James Rollins.

I have a difficult time with the contemplative or mystic Catholic writers: Merton, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, Gerard Manley Hopkins, etc. I can sit down and read treatises on canon law or Augustine's commentary to The Revelation of St. John, but something about the contemplatives seems way over my pay grade.

You like everything black and white. :lol: There are no real questions in canon law, or a commentary. What Merton and the like do is to plumb the depths of spirituality, to try to understand the soul and what feeds it. That's very, very, very difficult to do.
