M4's are capable of being fully automatic, but the U.S. military uses them primarily as a single shot weapon. So would you consider the M4 the military carries as an assault weapon?

 

Again the capability for 3 round burst classifies it as an assault weapon. As someone else already addressed the M4 has semi-auto and three round burst it is the latter ability that places it in that category.

 

The only variant that has semi-auto only is the civilian model and if the military is using that model instead of the ones designed for them specifically then they are undergunning themselves with a semi-automatic rifle that has a much more limited rate of fire in comparison to the M4 with burst and the full auto M4A1.

But if you are sitting in your office and a guy walks in with an assault rifle, the natural response is not going to be "hey, nothing going on here." Nature of ours and I assume a good portion of societies.

If you're trying to tell me that 99.9% of the gun rights fear mongers are at all concerned with anything other than individual rights, then I'm simply going to have to not discuss this with you. No one cares at all about "history"....they want their guns for themselves. They don't care if anyone else has one, as long as they have the right to have one themselves. It's not about the country, it's about the individual.

When I was young I could walk down the street with my .22 rifle slung over my shoulder, and did many times, without as much as a look from others. The anti-gun crowed would go nuts if they they saw this today. The way I see it, the anti-gun crowd likes to paint gun rights enthusiasts as evil and dangerous. It's ridiculous. It's not the people that are open and up front about it you have to worry about. It's not the law abiding citizen exercising their right that you have to worry about. Yet the media and the lefty fringe that are anti-gun have you scared out of your wits of them. They have successfully instilled fear in you.

Any gun in that setting would bother me. Heck I'm friends with a guy that carries a gun and he makes me nervous. Stable people crack sometimes and if they just happen to have a gun could be bad news.

There is a pretty big difference in walking down your own street where everyone knows you with a .22 rifle...and walking around public with an "assault" weapon (or at least one that looks like an assault weapon).
