August 19, 200917 yr I have to ask, how do we know it was an assault weapon? Because the article said so? Because the way it looked? I'd be willing to bet it was nothing more than a semi-auto. Regardless of my question, I see no problem with it, legal is legal. Why the objections? I'm pretty sure some of our military forces use semi automatic rifles during assaults on the enemy. Some use the M-16 which has a 3 round burst but some also use the M-4 Carbine and they use it as a semi-automatic. A semi automatic might be more dangerous than a fully automatic. It's definitely more accurate. That's just my opinion though.
August 19, 200917 yr So are politicians. To me an assault rifle would be any fully automatic weapon utilized by the military. Our military uses many rifles that are not fully automatic. I'd say they use semi-automatic more than anything actually.
August 19, 200917 yr Our military uses many rifles that are not fully automatic. I'd say they use semi-automatic more than anything actually. Which ones specifically? An assault rifle is select fire. A standard semi-auto is just one round per trigger pull, an assault rifle gives single shot, burst and/or full auto depending on the make. What semi-automatic rifles are you referring to? M4s and M16's all have semi-auto and burst fire. The burst fire option is what takes it into the category of an assault weapon. If you are calling a semi-automatic rifle an assault weapon, then I guess my girlfriend's .22 fits the bill.

M4's are capable of being fully automatic, but the U.S. military uses them primarily as a single shot weapon. So would you consider the M4 the military carries as an assault weapon?
August 19, 200917 yr M4's are capable of being fully automatic, but the U.S. military uses them primarily as a single shot weapon. So would you consider the M4 the military carries as an assault weapon? The military uses them as semi-auto in urban settings when they are having to go in buildings. They use the M4 because of the shorter length. It is easier to move in and out of rooms. It wouldn't make sense to be blasting with a full auto while in close quarters. But if you think they are using semi-auto during wide open fire fights then not sure what to say.
August 19, 200917 yr Nothing is wrong with them making a point and I haven't once said they were not within thier rights. I personally feel that the guns are being brought to these events as an intimidation tactic for those who do not agree with them on health care reform. An attempt to stifle political discourse if you will. That sounds a bit paranoid to me.

So if they were using it to move in and out of a room, they couldn't use it as a fully auto. To go fully automatic I believe they would use an M4A1, which has fully auto capabilities. I'm sure you knew that though.
August 19, 200917 yr I was told this by someone in the military... Of course when you can empty a 30 round clip with one pull of a trigger, accuracy isn't as important.
August 19, 200917 yr If he was not close then why do some people seem bothered by it? "A man toting an assault rifle was among a dozen protesters carrying weapons while demonstrating outside President Obama's speech to veterans on Monday, but no laws were broken. It was the second instance in recent days in which weapons have been seen near presidential events" Outside sounds close to me. Gotta read it all storm, don't just skim. Here's the rest: Asked whether the individuals carrying weapons jeopardized the safety of the president, Donovan said, "Of course not." The individuals would never have gotten in close proximity to the president, regardless of any state laws on openly carrying weapons
August 19, 200917 yr ^ I read that yesterday but my point still remains. You are out anywhere and someone is walking around with an assault rifle, you are taking notice and wondering what is up. I am not believing anyone that says otherwise. Again, it is probably just the taboo nature of it all.
August 19, 200917 yr That would depend on the shooter. I was told this by someone in the military... The M16 when fired one round at a time would be more accurate then the M4 when fired one round at a time. They are basically the same gun but the longer barrel on the M16 would make it more accurate. But to be honest this wouldn't even be an issue at shorter distances. You would have to get out to 200 - 300 yards before anything noticable. Plus neither would be used in a capacity where that type of accuracy would be a concern. In other words you wouldn't be using a combat ready M4 or M16 as a sniper rifle.

The M4 has semi-auto and 3 round burst while the M4A1 has semi-auto and full auto.
