Scott Rolen to the Reds

Unless they are trying to win the division this year or next, not sure I understand this move.

Does Rolen have one more season on his current deal? I hate to give up a good pitching prospect, but I think a red butt like Rolen is just the type of guy this franchise has been lacking for a while. I had high hopes for EE hopes, I still remember the hype after they traded another bust (Rob Bell) for him. One more failed Encarnacion and the Reds will complete the hat trick.

Isn't he from southern Indiana? Maybe that is a little incentive to play well being closer to home.

I think he's signed next year for $11M.

Yeah, I believe he grew up a Reds fan. I'm thinking his presence will be a good thing, and take a lot of pressure off Votto in the leadership arena.

I would say the acquisition of Rolen probably nixes my idea of Tony LaRussa coming to the Reds and reuniting with Jocketty in the offseason. LaRussa and Rolen didn't part very amicably in St. Louis.

4-5 years ago, this would have been an great, great trade.

Now, it is just one that is too late.

I can't see LaRussa leaving STL. JMO

He and Mozeliak, the new GM, don't see eye-to-eye on everything, and there seemed to be a little internal rift over the Duncan-Lugo trade.

Fair enough. I wondered about that. I just got back into following the Cards this week.

There may have been a rift but I don't know how LaRussa could have been upset. Duncan has been terrible since April. If Dave Duncan wasn't the Pitching coach I don't think anything would have been said.

I really like Rolen, but I think the Reds gave up too much. We will see.

Duncan's comments about the front office were telling, as was LaRussa's initial reaction about the deal for Lugo.

He's from Jasper.

Not sure I love the deal, hate giving up prospects as well as EE, but Rolen is an upgrade IMO over EE and it will have me tuning in to see his debut.
