Obama's "press" conference

Featured Replies

Upon reviewing it and the police report is from the perspective of the police officer, this Professor looked like he was begging to be arrested in the name of racism.

While I know racism is still prevalent in the world, actions such as this do nothing but increase a racial divide and heighten tensions. To further expound, you have a leader in a Harvard Professor taking things to an extreme not necessary.

I will be the first to admit I would be frustrated with a police officer questioning me about where I live if I was actually at my place, but that does not mean I would react this way. The cop was in a no win situation and Gates did nothing to diffuse it.

Why? Are they supposed to know what everyone looks like and where they reside within their district? And, while investigating a burglary it is not like he can just take a person's word for it. That would insinuate that criminal's never lie.

I am not disputing that racism doesn't still exist. I'm simply stating that this case is not close, at least as far as the police officer's concerned.

From a less rational standpoint, I think I might be frustrated with the situation, having arrived home straight off the plane from China, not having my keys, having to break in my own house and then having the cops called on me.

However, frustration does not warrant disregard for the police doing their job. A simple "thanks for checking things out" would have been enough to send the police on their way and for me to resume my activities.

Do not misconstrue "frustrated" for "flying off the handle yelling at a police officer." When an officer comes to your home and asks to provide identification that you really live at your home, the natural response will not be to put a big smile on your face and say, "Sure thing, would be happy to help you out." In an ever expanding world of little to no privacy, your home is about the only place you feel like you are not under constant surveillance. I would at the very least be interested in why he wanted to confirm my ID. I do not think that is unreasonable.

Agreed. :thumb::thumb:

It's called disorderly conduct. You can arrest people for being "unruly" in public, and not file charges.

Fair enough but is being in your home or on your property considered a "public place"? I would consider that private property. Officers should be treated with respect as long as they treat you with respect, but even if they aren't treated as such I still don't think that is a crime.

Anyone heard the audio tapes released yet? I can't link to them right now but the portions I heard certainly seem to back up the police report. The only racist at the scene of the arrest was the professor. Obama answered the question stupidly.

The caller never mentioned race. Said she couldn't see them very well.

Report says the same women told the officer that she saw two black men. Lady is not happy. She says she never once mentioned anything about race to the officer.

More race baiting lies from the media to promote their agenda.Ever wonder why we are being lied to.Think about it folks! In the eyes of the media Obama can do no wrong. They can no longer be relied upon to deliver the truth.I'm not trying to upset anyone, just stating the obvious.

I listened to the female caller's 911 call. In it, the dispatcher asks her twice about the race of the suspects. She says that she cannot tell at all about one of the gentleman and the that the other might be hispanic.

However, in the police report, she is listed as having told officer Crowley that the suspects were two black men.

In this instance, it doesn't appear that the media is doing the lying. Either the police (via report) are in error, or the caller told the dispatcher one thing and the responding police officers something different.

I personally don't really see what it matters. I would want the police to investigate a breakin at my house if the suspects description matched my description exactly. However, let's not blame everything on the media. They validly deserve enough criticism, but the blame in this instance lies elsewhere.

Here's where I read the police report: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/0723092gates1.html

Was she the only one who made a 911 call?

Harvard has the smartest idiots in the country.
I sure like that one! crank it up!

Good post Crash and most of these people defending the cop would have reacted the same way. I see that there are high school dad's and some with names that make me believe they are sports fans. Have you been to a local high school football, basketball, and or baseball game lately?? The way these parents act because little johnny or jane isn't starting or getting enough playing time who run to the principal or AD. The one's who donate to the booster club and then think they can run things. They can act like idiots during games which are played out in the public but wouldn't defend their own home. Yeah right!!! These are the same people defending the cop now. To be honest none of us would know how we would react if that happened unless it actually happened. Just leave it at that!!!!

Maybe that is what the President should have said...

Crash was reaffirming my notion that the majority of us would be legitimately frustrated if put in Gates' situation. However, that does not empower one to react the way Gates did, and I feel confident that the majority of those you indicted (i.e. defenders of the cop), would not have reacted the exact same way.
