For those of you who are saying the cop was in the wrong.....How was he supposed to respond in this situation?

It's good to know that you think it is ok for a cop to not give his badge number and name when it is request by a citizen.

He identified himself repeatedly.

There you go bringing facts into a debate again...

If you read the whole police report you will notice that the officer stated that the reason he went outside was he couldn’t hear or communicate with the ECC over the radio due to Gate’s yelling.

Hold on here are we pretending or are really serious about cops. Are we saying that cops don't lie and all cops are good cops. It doesn't matter what that police report says it doesn't mean that it is right. My problem is that as long as you are in your own house you can be as loud and obnoxious as you want as long as you are not physically hurting anyone. I don't care if the policeman could or couldn't hear he should have never been in there.

He reported to a call of a break in. If my neighbor calls the cops about a break in I hope the cops go in my house. Also, there is a black cop who was at the scene that backed up the stroy and said the cop was right to arrest him. There are bad cops obviously, but there are good ones that aren't racist. Just b/c the cop asked a black man for his ID didn't mean he asked b/c he was black.

So he just shouldn't have responded to the 911 call that there was a possible break-in?

The funny thing is if Gates was white, you would say that cop acted appropriately.

One of my favorite saying is that "there are two sides to every story and the truth lies somewhere in the middle." I think that it's true in this instance, also.

Too many of us are looking at this as either an "A" or "B" issue. Anyone that feels for the professor must be racist and anti-cop. Anyone that supports the cop, must be racist and anti-black. There are vast degrees between each of those. Most of us are going to fit somewhere in between those extremes.

I couldn't disagree more in this case. What reason is there to feel for Gates? What happen to him in this instance that he didn't bring on himself 100%? Also, you say the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Middle of what, the police report and what? What is Gates version? Does he strong disagree with any part of the police report? If he does there were plenty of witnesses there to support either side. I will ask you, did you read the police report?

I tend to give cops the benefit of the doubt until something proves otherwise. It is amazing to me that people on this board are allowing politics to get in the way of common sense.

Somewhere between the Gate's actions/story and the police officer's actions/story. In "somewhere in the middle", I don't mean center. You'll note that earlier I replied that I supported the officer's actions.

I am assuming that you also supported the officer that tasered the 73 year old grandmother back earlier in the summer?

I, too, give them the benefit of the doubt and have had no experiences in my life that make miss mistrust a cop. However, I am aware that everyone comes from a different walk of life and things may be different for other people.

Can't comment as I missed that story.

No Uk the funny thing is that the woman who called the police was a neighbor. She didn't know who Gates was. Also as a cop, wouldn't the normal thing to do would be hey sir I'm here on a breaking and entering call. May I see some ID please. Once Gates proved to be the owner, the cop should have left and taken everybody else with him no matter what Gates said or not. Cops catch grief all the time when a person is given a speeding ticket as a matter of fact you see shows all the time on it. In one instance after taking a big time lashing from a speeder the cop gave him the ticket and said have a nice day sir and walked away from the angry driver. Yea the driver got his words in but at the end of the day the cop won because the driver got the ticket. There was no physical confrontation then let it be. You know cops aren't above the law either and have to have thick skin sometimes. Also UK what has Gates ever done to warrant any of this?? He's an outstanding citizen? Also if the cop was right then why were the charges dropped?? Also for whoever said that the black cop agreed, come on, there are tokens for every ethnicity. Just look at the head of republican party, use a black man to bring down another one.

Comical. Thanks for the laugh.
