That was my senior year in high school....I went to that. The week before was my worst high school football memory. My senior year We (Newport) were beating Lawrence Co. 22-8 at half and ended up losing the game 27-22.

 

My best high school football memory was also my senior year when we beat New Cath for the fireman's bell for the first time in 13 Years.

 

I really do not have the best memory as a coach, I just remember the kids themselves more than I do the game because they play, not me.

 

I just enjoy watching the kids succeed at applying the things that they were taught and being successful. I care way more about kids succeeding by reaching their personal best than I do a bunch of wins. Winning is the bi-product of each individual doing the things that they were taught to the best of their ability. I always look foward to the next play because that play is the most important.

 

As most of you see, if you've read the whole thread, our senior season didn't go as planned at NewCath.:cry:

I have a few of them.

Best as a player:I have several, almost all my senior season (1976);

A. Trailing Paducah Tilghman in our series with them 0-19-2, we became the first ever BGHS football team to beat the Tornado (9-7 at McRight Field in Paducah)!

B. Being named as a co-captain for the Franklin-Simpson game in front of many relatives and former classmates and friends in Franklin, where I lived until I was 11 years old.

C. First ever perfect regular season in BGHS football history (12-0).

D. First ever district title and postseason appearance in our history (though we lost to a GREAT Henderson Co team 7-3 back when only the district champ made the playoffs).

E. After missing almost all of my junior season, I saw major playing time against Russellville; we pummelled them 64-7 at Rhea Stadium the year after we were favored by 40 pts and lost at our place 20-14! I was in on four drives, and we scored on all four of them in 1975!

Worst as a player:A. After starting the season at 6-0 in 1975, losing back to back home games to Paducah Tilghman and Franklin-Simpson (we were the only team to rush for over 200 yards against F-S that year, and we did it in ankle-deep mud!!).

B. With two games left in my soph year with a 5-3 record, dropping our last two games of the season at home to Hopkinsville and Russellville, and should have won both! Winning just one of them would have given us our first winning season since 1967!

Best as a fan:The 1995 3A Championship, of course!

Worst as a fan:Losing to Calloway Co 10-7 in the Shot Heard 'Round Western Kentucky in 1996; losing to Madisonville 18-13, also in the second round of the playoffs, 18-13 in 2004.

 

My Worst High School football memory --> Was fumbling five times in a single game, I played FB and was a bruiser of a runner at 5'9 240 lbs I could run a 4.7 - 40 and being somewhat of fat kid I always felt as if I had to prove myself and I did not want to be embarrassed by being taken down by a 5'7 165 lbs safety...lol (gang tackle or bust) Instead I embarrassed myself by fumbling 5 times. We lost that came 24-10

My favorite memory --> Scoring four TD's in a single and setting my schools single game record...(Record was broke 3 years later, but it was nice while it lasted) My stat line was 5 carries 9 yards 4 touchdowns.

Best was beating Franklin Simpson 21-0 to win the AAA State Championship in 75.

 

Worst was being upset by Campbell County (in spite of being huge favorites) in the last regular season game that year. It was the only loss of the year.

 

From a fan perspective, best memories have been watching every game that my two sons have played in for Highlands. Frankly I've received much more enjoyment watching them than I did winning state.

Best: Scoring 5 TD's against Polk High School.

 

Worst: Marrying Peggy.

Best as a Spectator: Watching Couch & Leslie Co. Beat Highlands @ Tates Creek.

 

My best as a spectator was watching Highlands Beat the pants off of Tim Couch and Leslie Co at Highlands!!!! I think that was the first team to stop him in his tracks.... RED DOG DEFENSE!!!!! :taz:

 

Worst as a Spectator: The ending of the 95 season... and watching Mason break his arm twice against the same team.

Was that the '93 or '94 season? Because Cov Cath schooled them pretty good in the '94 state tourney (Cov Cath went on to win that year). I think they held them to 1 tuddy, and intercepted Couch 4 times in 1 game at Leslie Co.:ylsuper:

He was the No. 1 pick in the draft, so it's not like he faded away after getting beaten by Highlands.

^ I agree and he probably made more money than I will in my lifetime.

I'd have to say that with Couch's high school career, a lot of it came down to him being a big fish...a really, really talented big fish, in an unfortunately small pond. Not to speak poorly of Leslie County, because I've got a lot of respect for the showings they have made in years past with relatively limited funding, and a very spread out demographic, but I just don't think Couch had the team to back him up when it got down to the nitty gritty.

I'd have to say that with Couch's high school career, a lot of it came down to him being a big fish...a really, really talented big fish, in an unfortunately small pond. It kind of reminds me of another highly touted player in NKY right now. They will go as far as he carries them but unfortunately it won't be enough to get it done. Great player but.............

Best - Watching Breathitt County win back-to-back state championships and 42 straight games in the process.

 

Worst - Losing that 43rd game and watching Bourbon County win a state title that we should have.

 

Some of my favorite individual games...

 

'95 Semis - Came from 10 down in the 4th quarter to win @ Danville, 23-20.

'95 State - Beat Franklin-Simpson 42-35 in double overtime. Trailed 28-20 with less than 3 minutes to play and the ball inside our own 10 yard line. Tied at 35-35 in the second OT, Phillip Watts caught a TD pass on 4th and 16. Forced a fumble 3 plays later to win 42-35.

'96 Region Final - Beat Newport 25-0.

'96 Semis - Beat Boyle County 12-7.

'96 State - Beat Fort Knox 25-21. Fell behind 14-0 and 21-12. Phillip Watts caught a TD pass (on the same play as the year before vs. Franklin-Simpson) with less than a minute to play to secure a 25-21 victory.

'02 Region Finals - Won @ Belfry, 21-0, on the worst field I've ever seen. Lots of rain that week. The Pirates finished the game with something like 60-70 rushing yards.

'08 Semis - Won @ Belfry as a consensus underdog.

 

A few other random memories...

 

1997 - Stopped Bryan Station on 4 plays from the one yard line to keep them scoreless.

1997 - Beat Belfry in the Honey Bowl...I think we were up 42-0 at the half.

1998 - Beat Belfry with a late TD pass to win a shootout 47-42. Allen Sperry threw for 573 yards and 8 TD.

1997 - Kyle Moore's stat line (against Leslie Co., I think)...7-13, 273 yards, 4 or 5 TD. Something like that.
