Playing in the regional championship after we beat a Leslie county team we had no buisness being on the same field with

Worst.....Beechwood losing to Cumberland on a kickoff return with almost no time on the clock. The varsity had asked to go in to secure the victory, but were refused and the underclassmen, running with their heads down, did not see that the kick returner had fumbled the ball and had chased it to the opposite side of the field. He merely picked up the ball and ran down the sideline untouched. I sat in the Cumberland section due to a late arrival and the fans around me had called Tim Saylor every name in the book. The statistics were so skewed in Beechwoods favor that it was hard to believe they lost.

 

Best .....Beechwoods first State Championship. Second choice....murdering Paintsville and Walter Brugh who was inho not what HS football is about.

The Worst Ones:

 

Losing my starting DE postion right before the Cov Cath game my senior year in 94.

 

Cov Cath beating us 53-9 in 92.

 

The Best ones:

 

Being part of 3 State Title teams at Beechwood from 92-94

 

Starting the streak of 9 straight wins against Cov Cath in 94.

 

Getting a key block on the Winning Touchdown against Murray in the 94 Class A State Title game that made us the first team in Ky history to win 4 straight state titles!

 

Being part of a family that has 3 boys in it with 5 state title rings who all three of us went undefeated during our senior years.

BEST:

Getting to play in Cardinal Stadium. Somerset Briar Jumpers 1988 Class 2A State runner up (This team will be recognized at this years Ray Correll Bowl).

 

Kicking the winning field goal as time expired in the 1987 region finals. Somerset beats Leslie Co. 17-14 (AverageJoe will probably remember this).

 

WORST:

Losing to a very good Fort Knox team in the state finals.

I remember that kick very well. Good times, that one won the region for us my senior year after going winless as juniors. Heck of a kick too, it was around 40 yards wasn't it? Or was that the one you hit against Corbin the next year?

My best and worst are the same as yours SHS Future besides the kicking parts. I couldn't make a five yard field goal.

 

Best was beating Danville at home after they beat us as the top ranked team in 2A in the regular season. We also got beat by corbin in district play and needed help to even make the playoffs. We may have been the first district runner up to make the state finals. We won @Wayne @ Whitesburg and @ Corbin to make the semi state and got Danville @ home because it was our regions turn to host. I played defense and stole a fumble recovery after being the ninth jumper to get in the pile. We only got a SHS future field goal out of it but it swung momentum big time.

 

Worst was getting killed on the turf at the old Cardinal Stadium by a great Fort Knox offense led by William Pollard (Notre Dame) and Eddie Thomson (WKU). Our offense did their job we just didn't stop them on defense as we lost 45-21. The high and low coming all in one week made it even tougher.

 

I have stayed with football in a capacity a would have never dreamed back them. I cherrish the chance I had to be a part of another state finals game and I siad to people I just wanted to have a better game than I had in the the first one. I felt a lot better after leaving Papa John's Stadium that night. I was thankful to have some of my friends, family, former teammates and former coaches there to witness it and support me because I knew the rest of the stadium wouldn't.

The Leslie Co. kick was 32 yards. The next year I kicked the 48 yard FG vs Corbin in the region finals. :thumb: Good Times!!

Honorable Mention: Scoring so much the cannon ran out of smoke 88-12.
