It's pathetic that stuff like this still happens

Some snippets from the article:

More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.

"I heard this lady, she was like, 'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?' She's like, 'I'm scared they might do something to my child,'" said camper Dymire Baylor.

The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership. But the campers' first visit to the pool suggested otherwise.

...

"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club," John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.

While the parents await an apology, the camp is scrambling to find a new place for the kids to beat the summer heat.

Very sad and pathetic, but proof that racism is still very strong in our county. I hope the country club pays out a ton of money in lawsuits. :madman:

If this situation is even remotely close to what was reported, this is disgusting.

I'm not surprised. I feel like all kinds of "hate" are everyday things now. This kind of thing is why I'm so sensitive to issues such as race and religion. People are ignorant at times. Honestly, I feel sorry for all involved, the kids who weren't allowed to swim, and the bigots who wouldn't let them swim because if you cannot see past a person's skin color then you honestly aren't much of an individual.

I agree and sadly there is a major double standard that just gets swept under the rug.

What makes this even more heinous, is that it's happened in Philadelphia-The City of Brotherly Love.:idunno:

Anybody else seen the movie "Pride"?

Thank goodness for the staff at Girrard College, a private boarding school in Philadelphia. They offered their pool to the campers. And to sweeten the deal, the owners of Gumdrops & Sprinkles treated the kids to a free day of candy and ice cream making. A big thumbs up to both of those parties. Senator Arlen Specter is also launching an investigation into the discrimination claim. I hope the private swim club loses so much money in lawsuits, that they can no longer afford to operate. This kind of crap really ticks me off.

I agree with everyone that has posted. This is horrendous!

I am wondering if they got their $1900 back?

No. Good flick?

We would like to think that this type of issue would be in our past, but sadly it is not. We can elect an African American POTUS but can't let a group of kids swim in a pool? This is just pathetic. These are KIDS for God's sake.

One of my favorite movies!

I also agree with everyone. Hope they get shut down.

First thing I thought of when I read this.

I think it will be hard to prosecute or sue on the basis of it being a "Private" swim club. I am not saying what happened was right but private clubs can make their own rules. You may have to have someone with more of a legal background answer this but I am a member of Bellefonte Country Club and I am pretty sure that they are exempt from some stautes that public facilities have to abide by. Again, check with a lawyer about this, but I am pretty sure this is correct.
