It's pathetic that stuff like this still happens

I think it will be hard to prosecute or sue on the basis of it being a "Private" swim club. I am not saying what happened was right but private clubs can make their own rules. You may have to have someone with more of a legal background answer this but I am a member of Bellefonte Country Club and I am pretty sure that they are exempt from some stautes that public facilities have to abide by. Again, check with a lawyer about this, but I am pretty sure this is correct.

I'm pretty sure that Bellefonte Country Club, or any private club can not discriminate based on one's race. If I'm wrong, then this country is even worse off than I know it already is.

No. Good flick?

PHILADELPHIA -- Jim Ellis could harbor the anger and bitterness and be resentful. But he doesn't. The words and snide looks are memories. In 1972, it was Ellis' goal to start an all-black swim club. So he created the Philadelphia Department of Recreation Swim Club (PDR), which is the basis of a movie coming out in March starring Terrence Howard called "Pride."

The movie documents the struggles and prejudice Ellis and his swim team endured in the early-1970s. How one time he heard underneath the stands at one meet, "Don't let those black kids beat you," to being the victim of some "funny" scoring at other meets and denied access to hotels during road trips.

Ellis is a legend in the swimming community, established when PDR started swimming national-qualifying times in 1984.

"Pride" covers the beginning of PDR dealing with the stereotype "black kids don't swim." The program has since produced seven-time All-American Brielle White, national qualifiers Jason Webb, Michael Norment, Atiba Wade, and Trevor and Tracy Freeland. Tracy Freeland has come back to the program as a coach, and also has two daughters who currently swim for PDR.

Not a bad movie. Also starred Bernie Mac; with Tom Arnold cast as the coach of PDR's big rival swim team.

What about Augusta National and The Masters? They are a private club and they do not allow women and they are selective in letting in minorities. Tiger Woods opened the door there and still they didn't open it very wide.

Like I said, I agree 100% that what happened is wrong, but private clubs can and do set some of their own rules.

I think that they will be safe for the same reason that Augusta National doesn't have to allow women members.

I hope I'm wrong though and they are forced to close and the owners go broke fighting lawsuits.

BCC does not discriminate race issues. If it did, I'd drop my membership.

I wasn't implying that.

I know. I was just stating this so that people that are not from our area will know that BCC is not prejudiced. I also didn't want anyone to think that I am in favor of prejudices just because I belong to a Country Club.

You'll have to join me for a round of golf and a great Bellefonte burger sometime! I am always looking for a golf partner.

You don't want to play golf with me. I am beyond terrible. I am very good at eating burgers though.

Maybe we will just go and eat then!

You could be like me. My golf average and bowling average are roughly the same, and I am a pretty darn good bowler.

Very sad and pathetic, but proof that racism is still very strong in our county. I hope the country club pays out a ton of money in lawsuits. :madman:

I prefer to call it stupidity.

And unfortunately, as long as there are human beings, there will be stupid people doing things like this.
