Sarah Palin to Resign as Governor of Alaska

Featured Replies

Certainly from your political perspective it doesn't add up. But seriously, do you think that you ever would vote for her under anything other than the most ridiculous and extreme situations? My assessment of your posts in this forum would lead me to conclude the answer to that question is no. But voters in the middle may look at it differently than you do. Who knows, we may be able to see if that is true or we may not. I just have this feeling that Palin is not off the national stage and she may use the next three "free" years to be getting geared up.

Habib is far more moderate than you give him credit for(he may actually be the only true moderate on this site), the problem is that he often has to play foil for those to the extreme right, which most people on this site tend to be.

I remember on many an occasion seeing Habib praise McCain on here. In fact his biggest criticism was picking Sarah Palin.

I don't see Habib the way you do. He doesn't have to play the foil to anyone. It's one of my pet peeves about this site: people claiming that such and such isn't the way they really feel, they are just trying to get people fired up, stir the pot or playing devil's advocate, etc. Just type your true positions and leave it at that. The fact that we have some far left extremists on here does not cause me to knee jerk react with more conservative posts that I otherwise would feel.

I consider myself a moderate to right leaning moderate. I don't intend to go back through every post Habib has made to reconfirm my impression that Habib is not the moderate you claim him to be. It's not necessary. His admitted bias is causing him to look at Palin in a way that causes him to make certain conclusions that a more moderate, or perhaps a better way of putting it, a less biased person would not. I'm not saying that Habib is thus some evil person. Quite the contrary. It's kind of irrational to think however that someone not biased against Palin is going to make the same conclusions about her actions as does someone that is biased against her. And that's the simple point that I've been trying to make.

Well said. :thumb:

If she does run for President then she has already given her oponents ammao to use against her.

I am not entirely sure how you feel about me in regards to this, however I feel much the same way about Palin, the sooner she stops receiving media coverage the better things will be for the Republicans who need to distance themselves from fools like that.

That said, even a moderate individual politically has biases. It is utterly impossible to look at anything without bias, as an attorney you of all people should know that. You cannot look at history without bias as you are framed by the world in which you live much as you cannot do the same with politics. We all have our own biases which will lead us to be more likely to believe one thing or another.

You being a more right leaning individual than Habib would lead you to believe the best in regards to what is going on with Palin. Habib who has an admitted bias against Palin does not believe as you do.

I actually remember a number of occasions during the primary last year in which you two were on the same side 90% of the time. So unless you flew to the right and he flew to the left the odds are good that you both just look at Palin differently.

As to the bolded I often play devils advocate because that is half the fun of being on here. You may no enjoy people playing that role, however when I see one side or the other going to far I personally feel the need to try to point out their absurdity and where their heads are likely located at that point in time(generally they are parallel to the stick). You may not like it, but when I see either extreme cropping up I like to jump in after them. Any true moderate would want to reign things in closer to the middle anyway, so I find it fitting.

Rove said tonight that she's going to have troubles refuting the claim that she couldn't handle being Gov of Alaska for even two years before it got too hot for her to handle.

In a way, it's refreshing to hear a politician say that they're stepping down because they don't feels they can give their constituents the representation that they deserve. I wish many of those in Congress would take the bold step and follow her example.

You sure about this? She SAYS she doesn't want to be on the job supposedly representing Alaska whilst campaigning for a national position, right?

That doesn't seem like an odd statement?

I'll ask you the same thing (above) that I asked 75.

Sorry, Clyde. Just trying to interject a little sarcasm. Don't guess I'm very good at it.

I have to take a little offense to this. I have long been a left leaning moderate and you will not find a thread in which I badmouthed McCain, other than a few about Palin as his choice of running mate. Honestly, I debated long and hard about whether to vote for McCain or Obama. Palin made that choice easy for me.

Truly, when you see me beside actual far left wingers, it's easy to see that I am a moderate. Btw...who are our extreme left wingers on here?

Same goes for me ...

You admit to being a left leaning moderate though. Habib's posting history has been much more down the middle.

I tend to be a right leaning moderate, only things I get extreme on are national defense and I will happily admit to that.

The true left wingers on here? I can only think of a few. There really aren't very many, we are in KY after all.

So, by your definition, moderates can only be 50/50?

If someone is a true moderate they are closer to the middle than a right leaning moderate or a left leaning moderate, which is my point really.

I fail to see how that concept is problematic. I really shouldn't be speaking for him anyway, I am just calling it how I see it based on what I have read over the last few years and a few other things.

As to the first bolded, that's a very interesting point worth discussing. Are you implying that no one in the US can ever get a fair trial because every it would be utterly impossible for any juror to look at the accused or the evidence in a trial without bias?

As to the second bolded, that was exactly the point I have been trying to make. If I interpreted Habib's post accurately, he seemed to be saying that Palin's decision to step down was the last nail in her political coffin. I responded that he may think so but that more moderate voters may disagree and her political career may not be dead. Assuming Habib is the moderate you claim him to be for argument purposes, allow me to restate my statement to be: he may think so but that voters that do not have the strong bias against Palin that he admittedly does may disagree, so we can move away from the whole who's a moderate urinating match.

She has made some odd decisions in my opinion and at this time I'm not sure if her step down decision qualifies as such or not. It's way too early to tell. The fact that Rove thinks it will hurt her actually leads me to think it may not have been a bad decision after all. I'm actually encouraged that she would do something that Rove thinks is a mistake as it shows some independence of the far right advisors and partisan hacks (of which Rove is clearly one).

It's a long time from now to 2012. Many a politician has recovered from political wounds (if you even conclude that her stepping down is a wound) in the course of 3 years. There is no doubt that her adversaries will bring this issue up again if she indeed does set her sites on the national stage. But if she comes across to the voters in 12 as a more moderate candidate than she was in 08; if she develops a better knowledge of national and international issues over the course of the next 3 years; and if she improves her public speaking skills, I don't think her decision to step down as Governor is as fatal as some are stating. And again, a lot of her success in 12, if she decides to run, will be determined by the mood of the voters at that time and Obama's policy decisions between now and then. Even the most polly annish Democrat has to be concerned about Obama's poll numbers. Yes his personal numbers are still high, but the numbers on his policy decisions have dropped. As I've oft stated, the middle voters in America are about as fickle as they come and their voting patters swing pretty wildly back and forth across party lines. In my opinion, the very reason she has been the focus of so much attention from the Democrats is because they realize just how dangerous of an opponent she can be in 12. We'll see in a few years if she is a viable candidate or not, but in my opinion it's way too early to write her off as a result of her stepping down as Governor.
