June 26, 200917 yr I think the death of Elvis still beats it. Probably, but not by a lot. I was on my way to bowling league night when I heard about Elvis; it was a shocker as well. Kennedy assassination - in 3rd grade classroom. Man on the moon - in Florida on vacation, up in the middle of the night watching TV. Twin towers - at work, watching on TV. The deaths of entertainment icons aren't up there with "world-changing events", but they still resonate with the public pretty deeply.

June 26, 200917 yr For those of us old enough to remember The Jackson Five, Thriller (one of the all-time great albums), Captain Eo, etc., it's a day of mixed emotions. I remember him before and after he fell from grace. :thumb::cry:
June 26, 200917 yr I'll never forget 1 girl in our neighborhood got the Thriller video early. About 20 of us kids piled in her basement and watched in awe! We then cracked out our gloves and danced all over the neighborhood. We moved on to break dancing. We honestly would do the worm down hills, the wave, the robot etc and get money for cars driving by lol. Some lady on the corner had us convinced we were going to NY one day to perform. What great times and memories. Such a great neighborhood growing up! RIP Mike! Made lots of great memories for me as a kid and I lured many hot girls on the dance floor in college lol It's kind of ironic I just watched The Jackson 5 on VH1 this past weekend. It's good if you haven't seen it. Speaking of it is flat out pathetic that Mike Jackson dies + VHI is playing Charm School while MTV is playing 16 and prego! You don't have old videos, interviews etc of the biggest rock Icon of our time? Seriously pathetic!
June 26, 200917 yr It took about two hours for it to sink in, but I'm beginning to feel the loss. Michael when he was Michael (i.e. before he came unhinged) was one of the greatest musicians and entertainers of our time. He was a tremendous performer with an incredible mind for music. I truly believe that he was really not in his right mind for the latter part of his life. I don't know if that was his childhood coming out, his illness that turned his skin white, or whatever. But musically, he was always one of the greats of all-time. I will miss his musical influence greatly. Rest In Peace Michael.
June 26, 200917 yr I remember where I was when I heard the news that Elvis had died, I'm not sure I am going to remember today twenty or thirty years down the road. Of course, that could also have something to do with age.:irked: R.I.P

June 26, 200917 yr We oldsters will always consider Elvis's death the quintessential music event, the youngsters who didn't know Elvis other than to hear his recordings will certainly claim MJ's passing the luminary event. Personally, I never thought of Michael Jackson as anything but a kook - but then I'm 62 years old. I'm sure that most in my age group share my opinion. The Kennedy Assasination (sophomore) and 9-11 stand out in my mind as the biggest national news events of my lifetime.

I was just getting ready to post about the bolded, though from the viewpoint of someone that doesn't remember Elvis's death. I do remember MJ from way back when I was a kid, so this stands out to me, but is not affecting me nearly as badly as when Dale Earnhardt died.
