American is NOT a Christian Nation. We are Christians living in America, Buddhaists living in America, Athiests living in America, Muslims living in America. We have no national religion.

 

If you are offended by the fact that we are not a Christian nation, you are overlooking one of the very reasons that brought many of the first of our ancestors to America...freedom from religious persecution. And that was important enough that when writing our constitution, the founding fathers ensured that Americans would have the right to freely practice the religion of their choice.

 

There is nothing at all wrong with being devoted to the religion of your choice, be it Christian, Muslim or whatever. But to insist that there is something wrong with insisting that we are a Christian nation, simply because the majority of our citizens practice a Christian religion.

 

Agreed. I have no problem with Pres. Obama's statement as being factually correct.

 

What did surprise me was his failure to make his point clearer. Had he explained it the way you did, I think their wouldn't be as much of an uproar with the far right religious folks. One of the bright spots I thought and hoped we were getting when Pres. Obama was elected, was that he'd be a much better and more elequent public speaker than was Pres. Bush. I think he botched this statement. But I'll cut him the slack that other folks failed to cut Bush when he was President. Man has a lot on his mind and if he occasionally mis-speaks or fails to articulate his point in the manner he should, I'm not going to get wrapped up about it.

One could look at it that way. Another way to look at it is, I know 3 Muslim people, and all three of them are jerks. I know 1,000 Christian people and 200 of them are jerks. Percentage wise, the Muslims are losing big time.

 

Muslims and Jews don't believe that Jesus is the son of God and died for our sins. Plus, they don't eat pork. How can you trust someone that doesn't eat bacon and pork chops.

As a Christian who lives in a country that was built on "In God We Trust" it definately bothers me. As a Christian and a History major I can tell you that every major empiror down through history only found it's demise when they turned their back on God! I will not support any views that has our country turning it's back on God. I am a former U.S. Marine and I served this country because it is the greatest country in the world and it is the greatest country in the world because it is a God fearing country. There are a lot of people who want people to believe that christians are now a minority in this country but that is a load of garbage. We are still a country that is mostly made up of Christians and God fearing people. I once had a friend who said he was an atheist and said he didn't believe in God and I told him it was ok because God doesn't believe in atheists. I am definately offended and upset that our countries leader doesn't think that we are a christian nation, I will pray for him!

 

In God We Trust was a lie. Many founding fathers could care less, look at Jefferson who was an atheist. Christian Nation? Most of our founding fathers believed in a Protestant, White Anglo Nation. Religious freedom has nothing to do with the start of American, IMO. Well it sort of does, but it was a rallying cry to unite the people against England.

 

Constitutionally we are granted freedom of religion and we have no national religion. In God WE Trust, but whose God is it? You know since Muslims and Christians don't worship God in the same way they both can't be right can they?

I am glad Bush proclaimed he is a christian and I think all presidents should be of christian faith and have a good relationship with God if they are going to lead our country. I want God at the head of this country and God alone. As soon as we push God far enough to the side that he turns from us we will wish..........no we will be on our knees praying that he comes back to us! I would be carefull of what you say, even on a public forum like BGP because God know all. I just can't help but think how many BGP'ers are Sunday christians?

 

Well you can want the president to be christian all you want, but what does it really matter? I don't care if the president is a satanist or a scientologist as long as he can do the right things for our country. Great first part of the post, I have to disagree with the second part though. Until 1930 or so it really wasn't that easy to be in America if you weren't protestant and white. Minorities, Catholics, other religions faced a lot of prejudice and discrimination.

 

I believe that Christians , Muslims and Jews worship the same God . The God of Abraham , we just worship Him in different manners .

 

They do, no one cares though I guess. I always thought it was odd that no one considers the thee to be linked.

 

Was it a requirement to be Christian to serve this country? Were those who were atheists, agnostics, Muslim, Jews, or Buddhists not serving the same country you were?

When I say we are a christian nation I am saying this country was founded and built on the principle of in God We Trust. It was not built on in Buddha or Allah we trust. What makes are country so great is that we have freedom of simple liberties. But what has upset many is that their is so many people trying to take God out of a country that was built on a Godly foundation. Seperation of church and state was inspired to keep the church from running the state government not to run God out of our country. I trulely believe if our country is going to remain as the greatest in the world our nations leaders need to have a strong faith in God Almighty. If we turn from God we will evetually feel his wrath, there are so many examples of this through history. However, this is my opinion and my beliefs, I am not in anyway trying to force anyone to believe the same. I just think in to many cases there is no one who speaks up for christianity and since Jesus Christ paid such a heavy price for me I try to stand up for him whenever possible. Just remember Jesus will return to rule this world and who is going to tell him that there has to be a seperation of church and state? Just a thought!

 

Actually Allah and God are the same person so okay. And who is to make the decision. Do we vote as a country. What religion are we? Because you can't just be a christian nation...that would be too simple. Are we a Methodist nation, a Baptist Nation, a Catholic Nation? Because if other non-christian religions aren't right, which branch of Christianity is?

 

Don't get me wrong I love God and Jesus, but I'm not about to tell someone what they have to believe in. I'm not going to say that we should discriminate in picking our president if he doesn't match our religious beliefs. This world is just destined to destroy itself. Something is always dividing people or creating hate. Whether it be the battle for land, gold, freedom of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, whatever we will always find a way to never quite coexist peacefully. In all likelihood we will as a people destroy america before God turns his back on us.

Muslims, Jews, and Christians all worship the same God the Father, but only Christians believe that Jesus is the true son of God that died and rose three days later. There's the difference, but no one seems to want to point that out. No matter how you slice it, all religions are not the same, and it only makes sense that somebody's wrong. I'm not going to try to change anyone's mind, but I'm not going to sit here and say life is all craps and giggles and we're all going to heaven no matter what we believe. That goes against everything the Bible says. Now if that goes against what the bible says, then how can we say we believe in the Bible, yet say all religions are going to Heaven. You see what I'm trying to say. Talk about a double negative.
