How do you get a splinter out

Featured Replies

My 2 year old little boy has one buried in the tender part of his foot. I've gotten them out of myself by pulling on them or a needle. I haven't bothered his yet because I can't even get to it and didn't want to irritate it. Anybody have luck getting them out?

Pick the surface of the skin with a needle and then apply pressure UNDER the splinter on both sides. You have to be gentle enough to not cause him pain, but you have to apply enough pressure to get it started out. Once the splinter reaches the skins surface, pull it out gently with tweezers. It may hurt him a little when you squeeze it, but it will be much better than allowing it to get infected when the body rejects it.

Also, clean the area with alcohol or something similar to kill any germs.

Try a bath. Sometimes soaking makes the splinter come out by itself, but if not you can usually just squeeze around it once the skin is soft from the water & then grab the splinter end with a tweezer. Last resort - sterilized needle (and good luck getting a 2 yr old to sit still for that one!)

I was just going to say that you may want to get your wife to distract him a little with a toy or something while you do the dirty deed.

Momma always went with the tweezers on me.

And if the tweezers don't work, go for the unconventional method of mustard. If I'm not mistaken the mustard should act on the splinter and bring it to the surface of the skin.

I would follow the advice already posted.

If that doesn't work, here is two unconventional methods I was recently told that is supposed to work well.

1. Duct Tape. Put a piece of duct tape on there and leave it for a couple of days. It will soften the skin and also the adhesive will help draw out the splinter towards the surface where you can get it with the tweezers.

2. Baking Soda. Make a paste of baking soda and water, leave it thick and on the dry side. Put the paste on the area where the splinter is and cover it with a good bandage. The baking soda will soak up moisture from the body and help draw out the splinter.

I haven't tried either of those methods, but others swear by them.

Good luck.

I always heard using drawing suave is best. Put some on it and put a band-aid over before you go to bed. It will probably be in the band-aid by morning. My Momma swears by it.LOL.:idunno:

I have used a stick pin or a knife, but I don't know how that would work on a 2 year old...

So is the splinter out and if so which method did you use?

An old method passed down to me from my grandma. Take a piece of bacon fat and try to tape it where the splinter is. It gets pretty slippery so you'll probably have to wrap it somehow. Leave it on overnight and the bacon fat will draw the splinter out or at least to the surface when it can be pulled out easily. It's worked for me numerous times. The hardest part is keeping the fat in place because it gets so slippery.

I've done tweezers + pin. I appreciate the input. Going to try some of the home remedies and see how it goes. I've pulled a lot out but this one isn't close to being out and I've never done it on a two year old lol. He's pretty tough thank God!

I nephew had some in his feet and he was crying they hurt so bad. We literally had to hold him down screaming and crying to get them out. It was brutal. He hated us for a few hours but we had to do it.

I always found with my kids that the body has a way of getting rid of some of the tougher splinters.
