How do you get a splinter out

Featured Replies

I think with a 2 year old I would take him to a doctor if the splinter does not come out. I could not hold a little one down by myself (or with family) for this one. It hurts the parents more than the child sometimes.

I always found with my kids that the body has a way of getting rid of some of the tougher splinters.

I agree. My nephew had a huge one in the bottom of his foot. His mom just watched it for any infection and it worked its way out in a couple of days.

If it is fairly superficial, I usually try and scrape away the outer layer of skin after the shower or a bath, then get it with the tweezers.

We just went through this. My 6 yr old had a splinter that went deep and we couldn't get to it with needle/tweezers. We tried several times, but finally just left it alone for a week or so and kept an eye on it for signs of infection. After about a week or so of us doing nothing, the splinter worked its way to just under the surface where I could break the top layer of skin and get it with tweezers.

While it may not work for you Son, I always used a razor blade, and cut it out....When it was deep...

Don't take my advice though, You'll be in court defending yourself for cutting on your kid...

I always use a knife to cut the skin down to the splinter. My be a little rough on a 2 year old, my boys never seemed to mind, once it was over and the splinter was gone, so was the pain.

I somtimes use the kinfe method myself but I am not sure about on a 2 year old. I "slide" the kinfe point just under the splinter/skin and gently pull/lift it out, put some neosporin/anti bacterial cream and band aid.
