April 27, 200917 yr There have now been over 100 deaths in Mexico from swine flu. There are 40 confirmed cases in the U.S. including 1 in Ohio. Is it time to close the border? Do we use National Guard to seal the crossing points? I say yes to both as a temporary measure.

We do need to take some sort of action, because you know fear there is going to drive more people to try to cross over here.
April 27, 200917 yr The United States should just put out a warning that anyone trying to cross our border illegally will be shot and killed.
April 27, 200917 yr What about people on airplanes? Also it seems that most, if not all, cases in the United States were Americans who visited Mexico on vacation.

April 28, 200917 yr Again, lets all panic and begin taking away American freedoms to move about the world as they please. Seems like we have already gone down the path of taking civil protections away about 6 years ago. And the conservatives want to do it again.

April 28, 200917 yr Take whose freedoms away? Illegal immigrants? Mexican citizens? It would not be unreasonable to shut down the border IF there was a legitimate concern that this outbreak is large enough in magnitude to warrant that response. On the other hand, if they prematurely make that decision (and it proves to be overkill) the effect of the economy would be significant.
April 28, 200917 yr In the United States, around 36,000 people die each year from flu related causes. Do we shut the borders down then?

Seems like we have already gone down the path of taking civil protections away about 6 years ago. And the conservatives want to do it again. Or we could say this is a result of the liberals wanting no restrictions on behavior and putting people at risk like they've always done. Either statement is ignorant and partisian rather than a debate about the problem or a solution.
April 28, 200917 yr I'm not so sure sealing the border at this point would do any good. The swine flu has already been documented in multiple states.
April 28, 200917 yr Are you serious? Most of the kids at the NYC school had been on vacation with their parents in Mexico. If you've got enough money to vacation in Mexico, I don't think sealing the border is going to help. Yep...let's seal the borders, and then that'll stop it. People with the money and means to vacation in Mexico aren't the risk. Seriously? All this crap these days makes me feel like I'm living in some dark parody of Chicken Little.
April 28, 200917 yr I'm going to Mexico in 13 days swine flu or no swine flu, I've already paid for the vacation so no way I'm skipping out!
April 28, 200917 yr During recent times has any country ever sealed it's borders in response to an epidemic? Did it help?
April 28, 200917 yr The United States should just put out a warning that anyone trying to cross our border illegally will be shot and killed. I like your style:thumb:
