April 21, 200917 yr A few folks knew about this already, but we couldn't "go public" until the contract was officially signed by both parties. Our son (Mason County class of 1998, B.A. Vanderbilt 2002, M.A. University of Washington 2004) is finishing up his doctorate in English Literature at the University of Washington in Seattle. Starting July 1, he will be working as a preceptor for the College Writing Program at Harvard University. Pretty nice gig straight out of school; but to tell the truth, this is exactly the kind of thing that he has been pursuing since about the tenth grade. We are very proud of him!

April 21, 200917 yr Author Congrats! What exactly does a preceptor do? Teaches a couple of classes (which is considered to be a full load) per semester. This taken from Wiki: At some old universities (Harvard, Cambridge, and Oxford), "preceptors" are not students at all but faculty members teaching courses in expository writing (Expos), music, mathematics, languages and the life sciences. Famous past Harvard Expos preceptors include New Yorker staff writer George Packer, novelist Tom Perrotta, former Globe music critic Richard Dyer, poet Dan Chiasson, and scholar Mark Gaipa.
