I heard he won the middle school lift and finished second in his weight class, who got 1st?

His brother (Hunter Lewis) who will be a 7th grader also competed and won some.

A 6th grader lifting weights? Isn't this a little early? (Unless he's been held back a couple of years). I thought pediatricians suggest waiting until 13-14 years old to start weight training.

Don't know the Lewis kid, don't know how he did or what he did, don't have a middle school kid. I was just suprised that kids that age actually compete in weight lifting. Good luck to the Lewis kid and his growth plates.

That what I thought, but plenty of middle school teams in KY are lifting, there are meets that you can go to as well. I think the kids will probably be okay, I just wonder if we as a society are too "win at all costs" and pushing our kids into things too early. But, if the doctors don't have anything wrong with it anymore, it is fine with me.

He's 13. Lifts a little bit differently than say what the high school kids are doing. Lighter weights, more reps. No worries.

We have too many fat and lazy kids.

This keeps them away from television and video games and gets them exercise in the process.

It sounds good to me.

I would think that some 13 yr olds are ready while others are not. Lighter weights and more reps sounds like a good idea.

Actually, a recent Mayo Clinic study now suggests resistance training to start at age 8. My son is 13 now, and began lifting weights at 8 years old, trust me, he has had no adverse reactions, but quite the opposite.

I was told Whitley County had a ton of 7th graders there! I don't guess you really have to lift a lot to compete some kids are pretty strong but doing some little things. You know yard work and some manual labor help build some muscles, just ask the Lewis boys!

I agree. Theres a boy from Bell Co. who will be a freshman, he's never lifted weights before because his father wont let him until high school. He's not bulky, but hes strong as an ox, and I've personally saw him get up and pop a 10 foot rim playing basketball. Who says you need sqauts:rolleyes:. I'd put kids in the mountains up against nearly anyone when it comes to strength.

Attached is a link to an article (from the Mayo Clinic) that seems to support your position, although it makes it clear that while strength training is fine, competition weight lifting is not a smart think for young kids to be doing: http://askville.amazon.com/lifting-weights-stunt-growth-10-year-girl/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=2603144

You are correct, strength training (resistance training) can begin at age 8, this is not meant to be a max type lift. Competitive, max lifting, should not start until after a child has reached puberty. After puberty, they can lift as much as they physically can, mainly due to the growth plates closing, for the most part.

I have no idea if the above mentioned kids have reached puberty.

Im going to go with current, Because of reasons stated above....

Cody Taylor...Remember that name folks

Here is a name you will hear alot about years to come. Juan Jones of Christian County. I've have teach 15 years in the elementary system and have had several kids go on to play college ball at several sports. Juan jones is by far the best athlete ever to come threw Christian County in many years. Last week at Weight lifting practice (8th grader now) he benched 220, squat 340, power clean 250, 4.65 forty, 35 vertical jump, and 4.2 in the pro shuttle. He is only about 5'7 weighs around 160. Good kid whos dad was a great player in the early 90"s who last a heart breaker to st.X in the semis. Will play RB and DB for the colonels.

8th graders can play High School Football. I think that 8th graders can't play varsity. Please correct me if I'm wrong
