April 9, 200917 yr "In broad outlines, officials said, the Obama administration favors legislation that would bring illegal immigrants into the legal system by recognizing that they violated the law, and imposing fines and other penalties to fit the offense. The legislation would seek to prevent future illegal immigration by strengthening border enforcement and cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants, while creating a national system for verifying the legal immigration status of new workers. " It seems to be a reasonable response. As pointed out earlier, the process of rounding up and deporting 12 million illegals would overwhelm our resources. I think most people would be satisfied with the fines and punishment, followed by a path to legal status. I like the steps to stemming the future flow as well as verifying the status of new workers. What I don't want is this to take away from the more pressing economic issues.
April 9, 200917 yr What is your proposal to round up and deport 12 million people? Sounds good to me. I realize you can't get them all. But you can't get any if you don't try.
April 10, 200917 yr I have zero confidence that the Obama administration would make a serious attempt to reduce illegal border crossings. I fully expect them to say that they will as a ploy to gain support for this legislation. However, once it is passed and millions of illegals are legitimized, it will be back to business a usual.
April 10, 200917 yr What is your proposal to round up and deport 12 million people? This isn't as hard as it might seem. All you really have to is to increase the number of illegals you deport to be greater than the number of new illegals coming into the country and eventually the problem goes away. You do that by enforcing the border and making some attempt at deporting illegals. Right now the Obama administration isn't doing much of either. The administration's emphasis is on legitimizing the illegals who are here so they can increase the number of Democractic voters. Also, I am all for significantly increasing the number of legal immigrants. I am not against immigration. I am against illegal immigration.

April 10, 200917 yr 2) Mines are cost effective, don't need to be paid for more than once and much more sure at stopping someone than a fence. This one tickled my funnybone..........
April 10, 200917 yr This one tickled my funnybone.......... For what it's worth, I have actually gotten to the point where I am serious.
April 10, 200917 yr For what it's worth, I have actually gotten to the point where I am serious. I don't doubt your seriousness, I just liked the phrasing.
April 10, 200917 yr I don't doubt your seriousness, I just liked the phrasing. Oh I am full of all sorts of colorful phrasing.
April 12, 200917 yr Maybe I need to be educated. Don't you have to have a SS# in order to file income taxes? Can an illegal get a SS#? FWIW, in the short amount of time I worked in taxes, I heard about illegal immigrants "buying" SS#'s from retirees who would still like to have money contributed to "their" SS funds.
April 13, 200917 yr This is rewarding someone for breaking our laws. This is as black and white as any situation could ever be. It is wrong! It is a slap in the face of every immigrant that has ever bided their time and come here the legal way. Saying there are so many illegals here, you could never deport them all is like saying there are so many felons that own guns, we should just let them all own guns. This is just another way of buying votes. The latino community will applaud this and it will motivate them even more to support the liberal agenda of Obama and the democrats. You can't change the laws to benefit you, but this is exactly what they are doing. :thumb: Forget the fact that we have to give them welfare after they are made citizens. Legal immigration is a positive sidenote, illiegal is what the word implies.
April 13, 200917 yr Author The cynic in me sees this as a way to garner 12 million more Democrat voters. The Latino vote issue has been discussed for quite a while. If I remember correctly it came up when President Bush discussed a free pass for those already in the country. So, since its been bantered about on both sides its a moot point to me. What are you thoughts on THIS plan?
April 13, 200917 yr :thumb: Forget the fact that we have to give them welfare after they are made citizens. Legal immigration is a positive sidenote, illiegal is what the word implies. I have to disagree about giving them welfare. I'm not sure I even know any illegal immigrants personally, but I do know the industries they permeate. And they work, work hard, and work the jobs Americans don't want, or feel are beneath them. I doubt the welfare roles will increase much.
