What does it say about Gillispie's recruiting....

Featured Replies

Don't we have to have some graduate? All the recruits count against the graduation rate if they don't graduate. As weird as it sounds we don't need all the recruits that are ready for the NBA after one year or so. We need some 4 year guys as well...RIGHT?

IIRC they just need to be in good academic standing when they leave. I don't believe you're penalized for players leaving early unless they're failing out when they leave.

Regarding BCG not being a good recruiter, I think he was. At least compared to the previous staff.

Patterson, Liggins, Miller, Hood, Orton, Ferguson. He was getting 4/5 star guys on a regular basis.

Remember UK was coming from classes where the stud was Shagari or Sheray Thomas.

I do think he got a little overzealous taking all the young recruits.

That said... Cal is on another level.

He wasn't recruiting well, and I was pointing it out the whole time. Working really hard is great, and the opposite of what was said to be the case with Tubby's staff. Both produced about the same results...

I never once saw that from you.

I was disappointed that we were going to give a scholarship to Konner Tucker. I don't think he could ever compete at the SEC level.

^ What did his coach say ? All Billy wanted to know was how tough he was and could he shoot.

He's had quite a few low 4 and high 3 star kids in there since 05. Still very talented, but kids that weren't ready to explode right away. He will bring in these kids in the 51-150 range as 4 year guys to sustain the one and done types along the way. Look at the Memphis roster over the last 4 years real hard before you think every kid was Rose or Evans...

Exactly! For every Rose or Evans there was a Chris Douglas Roberts type who stayed 4 years and was just a solid all around player! I had actually followed Memphis over the past few years, mainly just to see if they were as good as advertised. Calipari has a system that works!

And as for BCG's recruiting, it SEEMS that he was working awfully hard on the recruiting trail, but where were the results? JUCO transfers and low 3-star recruits?

There is no doubt Gillispie has done a good job getting some great players who were highly ranked to commit. But I think where Gillispie went wrong is with rolling the dice on very young players. It Appeared a few of them weren't panning out.

I never once saw that from you.

Go back to this time last year when I was pointing out how many of his post targets he was missing, or my thoughts on Euton. Only kid outside of Patterson that was a home run was Ferguson. It was decent, but far from great...

GT raised the question MANY times and stated that Gillispie was not the recruiter you all had him pegged to be.

I don't think UK fans were the only one buying the "great recruiter" hype that came in with BCG.

I agree GT was consistent with his opinion on BCG recruits.

That is a far cry from saying he wasn't recruiting well and you were pointing it out the whole time. The point is taken though. My thoughts on BCG is that he was a "tireless" recruiter. It was definitely overstated by the fan base how great he was, but it was absolutely an upgrade from the previous coaching staff.

He wasn't recruiting well enough to consistently win big, and I made my thoughts on that very clear. Orton was going to take time, and still will. Hood will be a nice 4 year player and same with Miller. Ferg is a stud. Zollo COULD develop into a nice player. That was it. 1st weekend of the tournament talent. No more than that...

Agree. Let me shift gears... do you think Ferg ends up staying?
