April 3, 200917 yr If you think he's only going to bring in Top 50 kids, I'm not sure what to tell you... That wasn't my point. My point was that he has more weapons in his aresenal than ever before. It is exciting to think about him with weapons at his disposal that he didn't have other places.
April 3, 200917 yr He wasn't recruiting well, and I was pointing it out the whole time. Working really hard is great, and the opposite of what was said to be the case with Tubby's staff. Both produced about the same results... As have I, he was not bringing in the type of kids that were going to get Kentucky back to a top 10 team.

If Calapari could sell Memphis it should be EASY for him to sell Kentucky.

You think that ESPN etc won't be picking up more UK games now? You now have a charismatic coach that has turned programs around, coached in the NBA, plays an NBA style offesne and has arguably the best traveling fans in college basketball. For a kid that is between two schools he also has in his back pocket all the banners hanging from the rafters, the past Pro players, the tradition to share etc. While it might not be a deal breaker for all it is a weapon in his arsenal he has never had. He has done great without it and I'm not buying for a second that it doesn't give him even more leverage!
April 3, 200917 yr Understood, but "Kentucky's storied program" isn't the sell many here think it is. It's all in how the package is wrapped I guess. Sitting back and marveling at the banners at Memorial is one way. I'd guess Calapari will embrace the storied program in a way that will reach kids. Can you imagine the official visit if a kid gets a call from Rondo or Prince. Has a big screen welcome video message from Antwan Walker or Rex. Meets Kenny Walker and Joe B Hall. Then Cal can go into the players HE has coached that are now in the NBA... Kids eat up the NBA connections. When you tie that in to the multiple NCAA Championships... well, I'll restate - few other programs can offer what UK can.

I never could figure out why he was though of as some great recruiter this past couple of years when he was signing young kids that no one had ever heard of. I remember people calling him the recruiting "warrior". It took one day for Coach Cal to get rid of 5 of them, thats eye opening...
April 3, 200917 yr Gillispie was happy getting players that were mediocre. I am not insulting the talent of these kids, but Calipari only wants the best of the best. Also, Calipari's system is very very very very different than Gillispie's, Cal loves to get up and down the court and ball pressure, Gillispie loved to slow it down, take good shots, and back off the ball and clog the middle on defense.

April 3, 200917 yr He's had quite a few low 4 and high 3 star kids in there since 05. Still very talented, but kids that weren't ready to explode right away. He will bring in these kids in the 51-150 range as 4 year guys to sustain the one and done types along the way. Look at the Memphis roster over the last 4 years real hard before you think every kid was Rose or Evans...I actually agree with you. He'll have to bring in the low 4's and high 3's that will stay for all four years. It would be impossible to sustain the program without those kids. I was just saying that recently he had only stocked up on 4's and 5's. I haven't given the Memphis roster much of a look but I'd assume that the four year guys had to be in place to enable him to get the one and doners.
April 3, 200917 yr Don't we have to have some graduate? All the recruits count against the graduation rate if they don't graduate. As weird as it sounds we don't need all the recruits that are ready for the NBA after one year or so. We need some 4 year guys as well...RIGHT?
April 3, 200917 yr In today's world of college basketball there's no Team that's going to have a roster full of 4-5 star players. Yes, those kids want to win championships, but more than anything, most want to play and play often. Just like most sports, you need some stars, but the role players are very important to the Teams success.
