Polson is one of the most talented /unselfish kids I have seen at the point guard position in high school basketball.

 

Amen. He's a terrific player. I was incredibly impressed with him last season as a sophomore, and he's about 100 times better than that this year. The young man has a very bright future.

Hazard didn't score a field goal in the 4th. Hazard looked like the better team through 3 quarters. WJ started fighting back late in the 3rd and never gave momentum back. Good game over all though. Whitaker went cold. Congrats to WJ.

I love Polson's game. I look forward to hopefully watching him Saturday and watching him next year as well. Last I heard he had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.

I'm with you. The entire team plays the same way. Leadership starts at the top. The coach is doing a great job with Polson and all the WJ kids. Polson will improve on many aspects of his game before next year. WJ and Polson will be fun to watch next year.

First Sweet Sixteen win by a 12th Region Team since South Laurel won it all in 2005.

 

Boyle County (2006) and Lincoln County (2007, 2008) both made first round exits.

First win by an existing 12th Region team since Pulaski County in 1992!

 

Remember South Laurel had some success (now in the 13th) and Harrodsburg (now closed) won a game in 1996. But no matter how you look at it, the 12th needed a win today!

That's 3-12 over the past 12 years with nobody advancing past the quarters. Additionally, I know Breathitt County got blasted by Lexington Catholic in 1996 and I'm pretty sure the region lost in '97, so if you go back a couple more years...

 

3-14 since 1996 with nobody making it past Friday. And, it's noteworthy, IMO, that all the wins are against regions 12-16. One more note, the 1999 game where PCC lost by 17? They lead that game 59-58 with about three minutes to play if I remember correctly. That's the game I was referencing above when I mistakenly said it was Iroquois.

 

They're 9-28 since 1981. No semifinalists since 1986. No state finalists since Carr Creek won it all in 1956.

Congarts to the Hazard Bulldogs on a good season, and Congarts to the Seniors, who played at Rupp 3 out of 4 years, went to the region finals all 4 years, All "A" State Runner-up, and All "A" State final four two times, Oh yeah and 1 sweet 16 win.

 

For a small city and school like Hazard with 260 students, you boys could hang in there with the best in the state...

I think we're all aware of Hazard's rich history. But your post reflects an old problem that mountain teams have faced for years at the Sweet 16 -- just being happy to be there.

According to the stats sheet Hazard was zero of 14 from the field in the fourth quarter and scored their last field goal with 4:56 to go in the third quarter.

They're 9-28 since 1981. No semifinalists since 1986. No state finalists since Carr Creek won it all in 1956.

 

Don't remind me about 1986. That is still being talked about.
