When the 2 bigs for Hazard picked up their 4th fouls, the game turned on a dime. WJ did a great job in regaining the momentum and dominating the final quarter.

I think WJ did a great job during the timeout between the third and fourth. That was right after the second big got his fourth foul. They were still trailing, but it seemed obvious that their plan coming back out in the last quarter was to attack the basket and get inside. And, it worked.

Of course, Hazard was the team that didn't really belong in that group. They just got included because they're a mountain team.

 

Corbin, SV and Elliott (if you call them a mountain team) have far better resumes.

The 14th region losing a Sweet 16 game is never an upset.

Ain't that the truth. Most inept region in the state at the Sweet 16.

Hazard really missed Campbell down the stretch of the season. He was the only other scoring threat besides Whitaker on the team. Dissapointing loss but not an upset IMO.

Why did Campbell quit?

Good win for WJ and good luck the rest of the way (except with Elliott if you happen to meet) !

Polson is a very good player

Congrats to Coach Hammonds and his Colts. Randy Troyer really did a number defensively on Whitaker in the second half and credit this young man for taking pride in his defense. He absolutely locked down Whitaker and made him force a bunch of shots. Polson the point guard is a heady player that leads his troops on the floor. He can really get to rim and has great handles out on the floor.

Ain't that the truth. Most inept region in the state at the Sweet 16.

 

Frustrating. Because they're not always the worst team.

 

It seems like when they're a huge underdog, they play over their head and lost it at the end.

 

If they're the favorite, they lay an egg.

 

And, if they're even, you get something like today.

That's 3-12 over the past 12 years with nobody advancing past the quarters. Additionally, I know Breathitt County got blasted by Lexington Catholic in 1996 and I'm pretty sure the region lost in '97, so if you go back a couple more years...

 

3-14 since 1996 with nobody making it past Friday. And, it's noteworthy, IMO, that all the wins are against regions 12-16. One more note, the 1999 game where PCC lost by 17? They lead that game 59-58 with about three minutes to play if I remember correctly. That's the game I was referencing above when I mistakenly said it was Iroquois.

I seemed to me that after the Polson kid was called for an offensive foul, on a drive and a bucket, West Jessamine came alive and Hazard collapsed. That was the turning point in my opinion.

 

I have never seen that call in high school and not much in college. With no instant reply to review, I am guessing the official called Polson for hooking.

 

That is an NBA call!

 

Of course, Hazard's two bigs each got their fourth fouls soon thereafter and Coach Holland rotated them until about the 4:30 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Mountain Boys were tough and I thought they had WJ going into the 2nd half. Great Job Coach Hammonds. The move in the 2nd half putting #3 on Carrot Top was a huge turning point. He did a great job at the top of the zone stopping #13. Polson is a great point guard and most importantly a TEAM player. The West Jess boys are a class act. West Jess on to Saturday morning but no further.

The Hazard Fans thought that was a bad call! WJ never looked back after that call.

Polson is one of the most talented /unselfish kids I have seen at the point guard position in high school basketball.
