Cincinnati Enquirer - Rumblings Gillisipie is gone...

Some blame former coach Tubby Smith for leaving the cupboard bare - which isn't exactly the truth - and others blame current head coach Billy Gillispie.

The truth probably lies somewhere in between, but I'd place a little more of the blame on Gillispie.

It's true that Smith didn't leave an abundance of talent behind, but he did leave Jodie Meeks and laid the groundwork for landing Patrick Patterson and Darius Miller.

If you want to argue that big man Jared Carter, who has been a bust, is the only senior left behind by Smith that's true, but how many great high school players were lining up to wait in the wings to play behind Rajon Rondo (who left after two years for the NBA), Randolph Morris (who left early for the NBA), Joe Crawford and Ramel Bradley. The answer is not many are willing to do that in any program.

If you want to argue that Smith brought in the likes of mediocre to less than mediocre players like Perry Stevenson and Ramon Harris and Michael Porter that's also true, but in Gillispie's two seasons he has yet to bring in a player who he starts ahead of any of them.

That's what bothers me the most about this whole situation.

Point 1 is dumb.

Point 2 isn't much better. It takes a lot of talent to make up for 2 years of experience. BCG has really only had 1.5 seasons to recruit, and he has a stellar class coming in this coming year. He also has ground work laid all the way out to the 2012 class. Thats something the previous staff never dreamed of.

I don't buy the bolded part. Lots of teams have really good players. Yet somehow also seem to have players waiting in the wings.

IMO the reason we didn't have them lining up is that for the most part, duing Tubby's tenure, there were very few players that were able to leave early. IMO the really good players are looking for coaches that they think will get them to the NBA as fast as possible. Tubby has been quoted as saying he wants kids who will stay 4 years.

Well people say that the likes of Porter, Harris, etc. should barely see the floor if any at UK. So if thats true, then it shouldn't take that much talent to start over them. Also remember how remember people always say well this is UK, it shouldn't be that hard to recruit talented players. That was the argument used against Tubby a lot, so you would think that Billy G would have brought in enough talented players in two years that could start over those guys. And honestly he has, he just chooses not to play them for whatever. I mean I don't think you have much of an argument here, because playing those guys with more experience, has made us basically NIT bound. So really what good has that done? I don't really get why you keep trying to defend it, its like you don't want to admit that Billy G has not done that good, because it be like admitting that you was wrong for maybe wanting Tubby gone.

I mean I admit next year looks better, however who knows what players he would even play next year. Would he stick with the experienced players you speak of who would then be seniors, or unlike this year play the more talented players actually? But next year don't mean anything right now, there is no reason for why this team should miss the tournament and that falls on Billy G. There is not much to defend here, I mean yeah when coaches come in it takes time. However there is no reason why UK should have fallen this far under him.

The talent is there, the coaching is not. BCG is a great recruiter, but he can not do anything with them when he gets them. You want to recruit allstars, you better know how to rein in the egos and make them gel as a team.

What is "stellar" about the class coming in beside Orton... Who is Hood or Villarino going to guard in BCG's man-to-man system. Both Hood and Villarino are not what UK needs to be a top 10 team...

One sportswriter thoughts/think so's. What makes him so right about Kentucky basketball, he needs to worry about the BearCats.

Skinner is not a beat writer. When he has written for the Post and now the Enquirer, it has all been centered around NKY Sports. UK concerns sports fans in Northern Kentucky. The Bearcats are someone else's baby.

Well I imagine they'd guard the opposing 1 and 2. Jon has enough length to defend, and from what I've heard of GJ, he has the quickness (certainly much more than Porter).

Other than that, those are exactly the spots he needed to fill, and I think he filled them well. Nevermind that he isn't done recruiting and may add another PG, and Pilgrim will also be eligible next year too.

Have we all forgotten the past UK classes where Rekalin Sims and Bobby Perry were the top recruits?

Yet we have no reason to believe that either will start or play much. I mean wasn't Liggins a 5 star recruit coming here, and yet Porter has been the starter are year. Harris has started the last two years for Billy G, so no reason to think he wont start him next year either. Yeah those guys have talent coming in, but as we are seeing that don't mean he will play them.

I just really don't get Billy G right now. I mean I know this team talent wise is not a national championship type team or even a top 15 team. But this team does have enough talent right now to be A LOT better than they are, Billy G just does not play the guys with talent. It really does not make much sense, especially since he has seen that it just is not working going with the guys with experience.
