Congrats to Holmes on another 9th region Championship. Congrats to Boone Co. on a fantastic year. Have to agree with most, the D was awesome tonight on both ends. The score was low, but those kids left it all on the floor tonight. The refs let them play is all I can say, there was banging on every possesion. Yes, there were alot of missed shots by both Teams, but wearing each other out will do that, also may cause a few forced shots. As far as Holmes in the sweet sixteen: I know they will play good D, and I know their not a bad shooting Team. If they can score 60, they should be fine. Good Luck Holmes!!

The combination of two very good teams that are fundamentally sound defensively, and officials that let things get way too physical, are the ingredients that lead to a 32-29 regional final game. In Holmes' first round game with Ryle I was stunned by the amount and severity of contact - it took Holmes until about midway through the 3rd quarter that night to adapt - but once they saw how much the officials were going to let go, I thought they adapted pretty well against NCC and Boone. Just not very entertaining to watch.

 

Rico Johnson is a player; the only flaw in his game is his unselfishness. When he is 1 on 1 against anyone, his TEAM needs him to take it to the bucket - very, very few players, if any, that are still playing would be able to contain him.

 

And for all those that have questioned the score and Holmes ability to win when they only score 32, I understand the initial reaction, because I wouldn't be able to understand it if I wasn't there. First, Boone is a very good team - they only lost 5 games, and most of those were to very good teams. More importantly, though, the officials let these guys absolutely pound each other. Saying every shot was contested is an understatement - I'd say there was too much contact on just about every possession by both teams. On a number of occasions, it looked like an offensive player had his man beat, only to have the defender grab his man, looking more like a defensive end making a tackle, and there was no call. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it was uneven; I just don't think it was basketball.

 

If the offiicials allow this kind of play in the Sweet Sixteen, there will be some ugly scores. I think Holmes has shown they can adapt. The question will be can the other 15 teams. I guess we'll see.

I was opposite the play and in one of the suites ( ) so I had a bad look, but my first impression was that the biggest problem with the reaction the call got was how late the whistle had blown. Granted I didn't see when he had full control but I clearly saw him turn and call the TO well before going out of bounds. The whistle blew as he was already past the cheerleaders...

 

This is 100% right. The only reason the call looked bad is because the ref screwed up on his whistle and then gave a funny look like he was lost. He then grabbed the whistle and blew it and made the right call. The problem was Housley by that time was 5 feet out of bounds. He had control and called the timeout well before going out though.

 

Also, the timeout was the right call to give to Cotton. He dove on a loose ball (which you are allowed to slide with) and he called a timeout... never rolled with it or anything like that.

There were a few times to the untrained eye it would have also appeared they were in a 2-3 to start a possession. Then Holmes would finally actually move and it was revealed as a man to man...

I thought it was a match up 2-3 and called it the same several times, but it always played out as a man to man. A wrinkle that Boone used very well tonight...

By the way, these two will be #1 and #2 next year as well.

 

I think Boone loses too much next year. Highlands will be #2 IMO. Boone will be 3 at best. McFarland will be hard to replace because of his length, ball handling, and interior passing. Earls is not a big rebounder. I think he only had 2 last night, and Pittman got the crucial rebound of Riley's missed free throw with 8.5 seconds left from behind Earls.

Boone has an excellent rebounder in TBrown, but they choose to leave him on the bench. Second chance points and missed rebounds proved costly in the game last night. T Montgomery is the player that most likely should fill in for Mcfarland, but he too was limited to playing time because he's only a sophomore. I also think Popp is a lot better than a 1 minute player. I hope the rumors of him transferring aren't true, because they will need him next year.
