Disagree....easy to have the best TEAM, but not the best players. It's not an individual sport, it's a team sport. Don't think the coaches should be embarrased at all. Apparently all have seen all the players that were nominated, and that's what they base their decision on I assume. There may be more to it, as far as whether some players are head cases or punks, or simply some may give a coach a reason not to vote him high on the list, but it isn't one coach.....it's all.

Like it or not, team performance always has a big impact on individual player awards - and rightfully so. That is true in all sports on all levels. That is the proof of who the best players are. The teams with the best records have the best players. Of course there are exceptions. That doesn't mean ALL the best players and it doesn't mean the top team's players should get all the awards. However, for a school to go 28-0 in Div III over two years and not get one single individual player award is a little mind boggling. Then when their players match up with another team twice and beat them by 20 points both times, how can anyone say the team that lost by 20 points twice (Calvary Christian) has 2 players that deserve individual awards and the winning team has none. If those two players on the losing team were better, they wouldn't be losing by 20 points two times. The proof on the court can't get any clearer than that.

Not being negative at all toward Beechwood....simply trying to provide a reasonable possibility as to why they didn't get their fair share. And I have no reason to be defensive about it, because I have no horse in the race. I root for Dayton and they didn't even have people in the running to my knowledge. They won several games this year, but lost to Beechwood and Calvary (both times I think). Individual and team are different when it comes to awards like it or not:isurrender:

On the Div III awards, I was just checking out Beechwood's record and I noticed Beechwood played Calvary Christian twice. First game BW wins 67-47 and second game BW wins 74-50. After seeing that, I think the BW supporters have a legitimate gripe about the awards. When you go 14-0 in Div III and have a player like Beuttel, it doesn't seem right for him to not win the POY award.

Finally someone sees my point on arguing why Beechwood didn't win awards!

Why shouldn't we? Maybe not look down on, but I would definitely think less of a kid that is a constant trash talker or yelling at the officials than one that just plays the game. There are kids out there like that you know...

It's apart of the game, whether some like it or not. Some kids feed off having confidence in their game. Practically every team has a few kids who talk trash from time to time. As long as they aren't crossing a line and show sportsmanship after the game by shaking that same players' hand and telling him "good game," I see nothing wrong with it. We have to realize these are KIDS. Different kids play the game different ways, but that doesn't give us ADULTS the right to look down on them and think less of them.

 

It happens at all levels...high school, college, and pro...so why do we choose to criticize and look down on the KIDS, but it's ok for adults to do it? For people to question a kid's character because of the way they play basketball is very sad.

 

Look at Michael Jordan...he talked trash A LOT when he was in the game...if he was better than you, he was going to let you know about it. It was his way of showing confidence. Does that mean he's a bad person off the court with no character? NO!! So why do we consider these 15/16/17 yr old kids as having a lack of character for doing the same thing?

 

These kids are picking it up from pro athletes, so if anything, they should be the ones to blame for setting a bad example.

Blake Bryan is one of the most competitive and probably the biggest pain for officials in the 9th region. He is constantly "helping" officials. Off the court, the young man is reserved, quiet, and very respectful. If you knew him off the court, you would be shocked watching his actions on the court. The competitiveness on the court has nothing to do with how the person carries himself off the court.

While I didn't go to as many DIII games this year, I have seen Beechwood play several times. I know in last years games, all of the starters sat basically the entire second half. I imagine the same happened this season. Its a shame players are missing out on awards because their numbers through 2 1/2 quarters (because every DIII game is a blowout) don't match up to players who play all 4 quarters every game.

 

That being said, I believe Bryan deserved player of the year, Romes defensive player of the year, and Snyder deserved Mr. Hustle.

If I had a vote it would go to Buettel. I saw all these kids play at least 2 times, some more and Buettel impressed me the most. He was an excellant floor leader, great shooter, and if the game was close he had the ball in his hands. I never saw anything in his personality or court demeanor that would cause me to lose respect for him. It looked to me that he gave 100% effort whenever he was out there

 

I totally disagree with all the Bryan supporters though. I believe that this kid has the most talent of anyone in the division and he has an uncanny ability to score the ball. That being said, I would not give him the award because the times I saw him play it didn't look like he was giving 100% effort at the defensive end of the court on every play. He showed flashes of brilliance on defense and an ability to be a lockdown defender but the effort was not consistent at all. There were several times when I saw him trot back on defense after making a basket. Those are things that most coaches won't tolerate from there own players, so I can see why a group of coaches would not vote him the POY even though, IMO, he is the most talented player in the division.

 

As for Flanigan, he played very well in the games I saw. Great shooter, team leader, but I was just more impressed with Buettel and IMO Beechwood's success should ultimately decide when its such a close race.

As a Bryan supporter I have to disagree with you. As the floor leader and player on Villa who is in on almost every play, who leads the team on Reb, steal, blks and ast. ( I will not even talk about offense) On defense he also has to see and play more than just his man. And Villa's lack of a big man is ask to play in the post, with his height that is crazy but that is what he is asked to do. I kills me all you Bryan haters out there wanted to trash him but will say that he has the most talent. Or the ones that say he trash talks or God forbid smiles, so he talks to players on the floor, I would ask just one to come forward and say he trashed them. I will agree he talks to much to the ref. but is that because he is speaking captain, if so he may take that to far?

 

All three player are fine player. If you are going to give this POY award to the best player I say it goes to Bryan. If the award goes to the best player on the best team you have to give it to Buettel. But to not give it to either because their Team did not go as far in the all A that is wrong, one game that the team may not have won, over a players play or wins over the whole season which is alot harder to do seems just wrong to me. But I am not a voting coach so, Congrets to Flanigan!
