Russell's academics are outstanding always have been! And the athletic program is great as well. It Just seems to me alot of the Devil fans have turned their back on their own team. I work with several Devil fans. And over the years they were the most diehard Russell fans ever. And if you ask them how they're gonna be this year, they say comments like who cares anymore. I don't know what's going on in Flatwoods/Russell but it just doesn't seem the same. Whatever the problem may be, I hope it gets worked out for the true fans like you Parker. :thumb:

 

 

As far as Raceland goes the school is on the rise. Everything seems to be improving. And from what I understand it's just an overall great experience just bieng a average student. Coldiron, Dixon, and the rest of the staff do alot of things that makes it a much more enjoyable experience. At this rate we'll be playing 2A football before to long!

Russell is a fine school but most do not think it has that small hometown school feel. Most gratuates from Raceland can name each and everyone they graduated with. They are all extremely close. Now days with everything that is wrong with this old world that is a positive aspect sending your child to a small school where individual attention can be given to the child.

 

 

This is very true! I know where most of my classmates are now, where they work, etc. Bieng a smaller school Raceland doesn't really have the cliques like bigger schools do.

They didn't call us the "Ramblers" for nothing. Raceland, originally, called the Ramblers because they didn't have a home, they had to play all their games on the road. Ramblers latter shortened to the "Rams".

 

:thumb::thumb: I had posted this on another thread about school nicknames/mascots, the original name "Ramblers" had nothing to do with a Ram, A Ram was picked up as a logo, mascot and eventually football coach Larry Heck got the name oficially changed to the "Rams" in the early 70's.

 

I really like the "Ramblers" name better but that's just me I guess. At any rate......."Once a Ram/Rambler.....Always a Ram/Rambler". :ylsuper: and any person that ever walked the halls of that school is a "Ram/Rambler family" member and always wll be, that's just how we roll.......:thumb:

 

 

As for the "he has a son" question.....there may be some "Ramblers" looking at that need as we speak. ..................... :sssh::popcorn:

Exactly. My wife is a 1991 graduate from Raceland and she knows all the grads from 1986 through 1996 just from being in the same building together. What is there, 450 kids in 7-12 grades? That is not a lot and not too many to remember.

:thumb: One example ...I graduated Raceland in 1975 and we graduated 75 people, at that time it was the largest class to come out of the school in something like 10 years. That same year was GCHS's first I believe and they graduated something like 350 or so. I don't think that Raceland had that many in the entire school (9-12).

Oldram, somehow I believe that we would still manage to come up with some. LOL.

Just my two cents on the reasons for transfers, not to harp on it, just to explain my side.

 

Like previously stated, Raceland has a very good academic program, is it better then Russell's? I think it is every bit as good as Russell's. But, the big difference is Russell's academic team does much better. Now, I don't think that an academic team being successful is necessarily indicative of a better academically focused school. Russell gets the best bang for their buck with the academic team, Raceland does not. Raceland's academic team does not have all the best students on it. There are many reasons for that, but many of the top level students do not participate on the academic team.

 

For instance, Raceland had three 4.0 students on the football team last year, that did not participate on the academic team. Could they have helped the academic team? Possibly. And there are other very good students on the boys and girls basketball teams that could as well, but they are not on the academic team.

 

Another good reason for transfers: everyone at Raceland is in the "In Crowd", there are not many clicks at Raceland. My wife attended Russell and could not understand this concept, until she began working at Raceland. She was amazed that I knew everyone at Raceland, the young people, the older people, and everyone in my class. I knew almost all of the parents of the kids in the school that she works, because I went to school with them, or because I knew them from other schools because I played sports against them or went to camps with them.

 

Not many transfer out. Once a student attends Raceland, very few of them ever leave. For some reason, people from other area schools see Raceland as a lesser school, but once a person comes to Raceland and sees it from the inside, they are amazed. I have heard it a hundred times from parents, "If I knew this was what Raceland was like, I would have started my children her in kindergarten". I guess you have to see Raceland from inside to understand what it is about.

 

I had one parent of one recent transfer tell me just the other day that he was amazed at how Raceland did things, he never dreamed that this was what it was like. He said everyone knew everyone, everyone was kind to everyone, and everyone has treated him and his son like they had been there their whole life, but in reality they had only been there three days.

 

The parent of one transfer, that has since graduated from Raceland tells everyone that "Raceland is the best kept secret in Eastern Kentucky". He says that all the time.

 

There are schools that are good at certain things, but in our area, I think Raceland is the closest to providing a good all around high school experience. Good academics, good athletics, good social life, no violence, no drugs, high graduation rate (100%), a good overall high school experience. I don't want my kids to go anywhere else, and I am very glad that I was fortunate enough to attend there as well.

To continue your thought on transfers, I'll add my comment. I am a graduate of Greenup and my daughter started out at Wurtland. When we decided to transfer her to Raceland, it had absolutely nothing to do with athletics. We had friends in the system that were Greenup graduates as well and one of my best friends doing his student teaching in Mrs. Baker's math class. Everyone kept encouraging the transfer for her academic developement and I can say it was the best decision I have ever made. Caitlin started at Worthington in the 5th grade and has excelled in the classroom. She is currently tied with another talented girl for the top of her class going into her Sophomore year. From day one, she was accepted and included as one of their own, not looked upon as an outsider. I have been in love with this school system for 6 years now and am starting my 4th year as team doc and it seems I am drawn ever closer to the center every day. It truly is an experience I never thought possible. It is a family atmosphere. And you are absolutely correct Ram, kids transfer to Raceland not from Raceland.

You're right alum, you will be surprised at how many former Greenup students have their children at Raceland, I know I always am, you will see quite a few Russell graduates as well. People that I played sports against in high school, I see all the time. Good to have your kids there, you and them will be happy.:thumb:

On a side note: I don't know if you heard or not, but after the first of the year, Campbell Elementary will be adding on five new classrooms to accommodate the student numbers. There is now a waiting list for students at Campbell, the five new classrooms will make room for the increased number.

8th grade lineman by the name of Melvin just enrolled from Wurtland. I hear he is pretty good, can't wait to see him play middle school ball.

I have only lived in the area for 6-7 years and in my opinion the reason Raceland seems to acquire a number of transfers, starts in the classroom with the reputation the fine men and women have built by doing an outstanding job teaching our children. Just a quick shout out to the Football staff in the classroom (teachers), keep up the great work.

 

Very good post Option V :thumb:, this is basically a sports mesage board but academocs/education is really more important when you get right down to it and is too often overlooked. Other districts have good academic schools as well but Raceland/Worthington schools (admin.,teacher. staff) can hold their own with anyone in that dept (academics) as well.
