Pleasure Ridge Park 116 Portland Christian 21

Featured Replies

Give me a scenario or "game report" that would justify this.
Portland Christian has allowed the following scores:

99 - 12/2 (Burgin)

96 - 12/22 (Whitefield Academy)

85 - 12/30 (Beth Haven)

107 - 1/2 (Wolfe County)

100 - 1/6 (DeSales)

91 - 1/21 (Shawnee)

Portland Christian has score 61pts one time and then 5 times in the 40's, 7 times in the 30's and 4 times in the 20's.

They are averaging 36.5pts scored.

They allow 83.8pts

0-17 record and I'm not bashing or trying to diminish this program at all but they're struggling this year.

With a point spread like that, PRP is liable to be #1 in Cantrall's poll. (just kidding)

There can be no explaination for a score like this. Even if the other team begs you to keep scoring on them you back down.

:thumb:Called good sportsmanship. Beat them handily, but not by 95......totally unnecessary, and in the grand scheme of things, the Cantral ratings and $1.29 will get you a cup of coffee.

I take it all back, I am disappoited they didn't go for the 100 point win that would have been impressive. I am sure this will have PRP ready for regional action. Great learning tool. Just because you can beat a team by 50 doesn't mean you do it. Unless it is UK vs. UT, Florida or Louisville then it is ok, lol.

Also, before anyone says anything...these two teams are district opponents and the district voted to seed. And while Portland Christian is never a powerhouse, they are way down this year.

I bet PC voted against seeding.

Again, for the millionth and 1 time. Unless you were there at this game, no one can say a team ran up the score!

As long as a team that got up huge starts to sub, and the bench players are getting significant playing time, they don't press, don't trap, and not looking to score on every open three pointer, then there is nothing you can do! The players on the bench work hard too! It's not fair to them to tell them to sandbag it and pass up an opportunity to play hard and score! What? Want to tell a kid who finally gets into a game to purposely miss a shot? A free throw?

Also, the team on the losing end is not going to get any favors if teams take it easy on them, they won't learn a thing. Why were they even playing PRP? No one held a gun to their heads and told them to play PRP. I think many times when these outcomes happen, it's dislike for the winning school/program why they want to criticize more than anything.

We have seen it before, even this year, where people will complain about a score, but then later on even fans of the losing team say that there was nothing that the winning team could do, they came to the defense of the winning team. Or we get someone like Strike 3, who digs a little into the losing teams record and past scores, EVERYTIME someone does this it shows the real story, how down the losing team is.

Game stats don't always show you what happened, it doesn't show you a lot of things. And you can't compare one sport with another.

Now, I would listen to anyone who was at the game.

Just curious. I've pretty much always been an advocate of "anything goes in the first half" for FOOTBALL. See the HHS-CCHS reference above.

Can a similar "philosophy" be applied to basketball?

And another thing. I've seen MANY the heated discussion on BGP regarding who should pull the starters first - the team that's way ahead or the team that's way behind. Thoughts? Start another thread, titled something like, "When is Enough Enough"?

I think its ridiculous at the shine people are cutting over these score's! If you dont want to get thumped don't play the game!! Yes we took plenty when I played and it didn't hurt me none!!! If anything it made me work harder to get better!!!! When these kids get out in the real world it isnt a piece of cake and if someone can beat them by a 1000 so to speak, they will!!!!! Quit whining and move on to the next one!!!!!!!!!!

I must admit that I didn't even know there was a team named Portland Christian.

I'm with you, and I spend about ten minutes a day on the khsaa scoreboard.

As far as I know they have always had a basketball team.

No one said they shouldn't play or should purposely miss a shot. As I said in my earlier post, there are lots of ways to simply slow the game so that a 95 point victory doesn't happen, and I would hope all HS coaches know how that could be done.

Just curious. I've pretty much always been an advocate of "anything goes in the first half" for FOOTBALL. See the HHS-CCHS reference above.

I think we all have to understand that it's NOT THE SCORE that matters here - it's how the game was played.

In the Texas girls' game that ended 100-0, the winning team pressed with their starters until they reached triple figures. There's absolutely no way on this earth to defend that sort of unsportsmanlike behavior. It WASN'T the score - it was how they got there.

That is also the question here. How did PRP get to this margin?

I tend to agree that it's difficult to conceive how PRP could have reached a 95 point cushion without keeping the pedal to the floor a bit too long...but...in looking over PC's scores with teams that are nowhere near the caliber of PRP, I'm not entirely surprised.

PRP seems to be, at least to me, a very classy program, that wouldnt win by playing and pressing with their starters the entire game. I wasn't there so I can't say for sure, but it's a safe bet that PRP won this game emptying their bench.

Well said SportsGuy. If I am Portland Christian and PRP starts to clearly stall or do things to not score, I would be upset. If PRP's coach says no shots till 5 passes and on pass three a guy is wide open under the basket and doesn't shoot, I would be upset if I was the Portland coach. That to me is more humiliating than this score. If PRP stops playing defense and let's my team score, I am upset. If a PRP player makes a steal and has a clear path to a breakaway layup and pulls up, I am upset if I am Portland's coach. As long as PRP didn't press and played the end of the bench the majority of the game, then there is nothing to be upset about.

So what is wrong with teaching our kids to have respect? Would a 55 point victory (rather than a 95 point victory) have been such a bad thing for PRP to live with? By way of analogy, the Highlands vs. Cov Cath rivalry is among the best (and most heated) in the state in all sports. A couple of years ago the two student bodies almost got into a scrap when their teams met in a bowling match! But, Highlands goes about their business with class. The regular season Cov Cath - Highlands football game box score tells you all you need to know about Coach Mueller.

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Final

Covington Catholic 0 0 0 0 0

Highlands 21 34 6 0 61

Highlands may well have been able to score a hundred on us. I suspect Coach Mueller thought it more important to teach his kids a thing or two about class and dignity rather than take the opportunity to kick an opponent when they were down. The kids at PRP might have benefitted from such a lesson.

I just got my power back on:dancingpa:banana::banana::dancingpa

so to answer your question, I have said it before and I'll say it again, I was taught to respect my opponent by shaking his hand after the game and telling him good game. I think it is just as disrespectful to not play 100%. If you can't give your all and play your best because you have a weaker opponent, then tell them not to schedule you anymore. I have no problems whatsoever with being a coach or watching my son taking a beating like that. Hopefully it'll teach me to not schedule teams like that and it'll teach my son that sometimes no matter how hard you work there just may be someone better than you. It's called a life lesson. Learn from it and move on.
