January 7, 200917 yr I thought it would be interesting to see people's opinions on the top 5 programs in the country. Im not necessarily talking about only this year although this year will have a bearing. getting the order of the teams is tougher than you think. I'll start it off: 1. USC 2.Florida 3.Oklahoma 4.Texas 5.Ohio State This is a tough one when programs like LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Penn State, etc are left out. Also, programs like Boise St and Utah could also be considered. What do you guys think? Lets see your top 5!!
January 7, 200917 yr 1 Florida 2 Southern Cal 3 Oklahoma 4 Texas 5 Alabama I look at "top program" status as those that have tradition and the ability to attract top recruits. I think with Saban as HC Alabama is firmly in that group. That's why I added them. Their future looks good, and their past needs no explanation. Florida has been dominate for many years. If they win the championship Thursday it will be their 3rd since the mid-1990s. Southern Cal could very well be #1 too, but imo Florida has a slight edge.
January 7, 200917 yr 1. USC 2.Florida 3.Oklahoma 4.Texas 5.Ohio State I've got no problem with the teams you've got. Might change the order just a bit, depending on how far back you want to go. If it's over the past 5 or 6 years, then I'd go with: 1. USC 2. Florida 3. Texas 4. Ohio State 5. Oklahoma Either way, you're talking about the "big boys" of college football.
January 7, 200917 yr The Utah AG just called. All of you are now being sued. If he (Utah AG) really wants us to include everyone, then I'm going with Mount Union College as my #1 pick. Granted, they're a Division III program, but they have DOMINATED over the past 15 years. The only other school (in any sport) that would be comparable would be John Wooden's UCLA. Since 1993, Mount Union has won 10 National Championships, and played in two other champsionship games. That's 12 out of the last 16 years they've played for the title! During that time Larry Kehres has gone 214-8, with 9 undefeated seasons. That's a record that Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Jim Tressell and everybody else would kill for!
January 7, 200917 yr I'm basing my list on a combination of what they did this season and what I expect from them going forward. 1. Southern Cal - No explanation necessary. 2. Florida - Ditto. 3. Alabama - They have a top 5 college coach and recruiter in Saban. He's been bringing in top notch talent since he arrived and the team exceeded expectations this season and should be better going forward. 4. Texas - Since Mack Brown finally figured out how to beat Oklahoma, its hard to argue with what Texas has accomplished. 5. Ohio State - I hate OSU. That said, they still bring in top notch talent and despite some recent BCS struggles, they deserve some credit for always being there. But, mostly, going forward, I think Terrelle Pryor has the ability to be one of those game changing, nightmare, dual-threat QB's at the college level that can transform a talented team into an elite one. And, a couple of teams that could easily crack the top 5 and knock someone else down... Georgia - I think Richt is a great coach who brings in top notch talent every year. I think its just a matter of time before everything clicks and the Bulldogs win a title. Oklahoma - Great season this year, but they seem to be hot and cold depending on what they can come up with at the QB position. When Stoops first arrived, the Sooners were all about an aggressive, attacking, dominating defense. But, the defense hasn't been as good in recent memory and everything seems to center around whether they can find a QB that can trigger a high scoring offense. Like Ohio State, they've also had some recent BCS struggles and embarassments. The reason I rate OSU higher is that I think they'll be better going forward with the QB position settled, while OU has to find a replacement for Bradford.
January 7, 200917 yr 1. Florida 2. USC 3. Oklahoma 4. Texas 5. LSU Cannot see putting a BIG 10 schoool in this list.
