Unfortunately, I would have to agree that the best program in the 9th the past 25 years has been Highlands.

 

They've been to the Sweet 16 more than any other team and they've gone just as far as any other teams.

 

It looks like HHS has 6 regional championships compared to Holmes' 5 in the past 25 years.

 

If Holmes wins the region this year, they'll have 6 regional championships in the past 25 years, and HHS will only have 5.

Yes they are. I remember that Scott 1989 team with Chris Haynes, the Smiths, Kirby. We got em in 1st round of Regionals. I think they ended up beating Holy Cross in finals. That has to be the only time they got close to a Regional title outside of last year in the 10th right?

 

I can't ever remember Scott being a real contender in the 9th either. In '01 they had Chris Thompson & Jamie Medved (the Aussie) and were a pretty good team, but I don't think they did much (read: anything at all) in the regional tournament. I guess they had Ben Lye that year, too.

The last 25 years will only get you back to 1984. Loved Charles Hurtt and those Rockets though:thumb:

 

I understand that - my point was that Oldham and Shelby have been dominating their region for MORE than 25 years.

Clark and Mason have normally been the 10th region favorites the past 10 years or so, throw in there a good Pendelton County team with Belcher and a Bishop Brossart but Clark just couldnt win any titles up at Mason County's gym. Clark either drew Mason first round or lost in the finals many times that I can remember when Lofton, Grutza and company were there. Mason has no doubt been the dominant team in the 10th, but Clark had some really good teams and my guess is that if they were in other regions, possibly weaker ones they would have been to Rupp a lot more than twice the past 25 years. Not many teams can go to Mason and win a regional title, they have real good home court advantage!

Rule 13

Although they have not had much success recently, Harlan's run in the 13th region in the nineties has got to get them in the running. 4 Regional titles one trip to the semis and seven or eight All A Regional titles, plus two Class A State Titles, not to shabby by Coach Mike Jones and his boys.

 

Played them in the Quarter-finals in 1993 All A classic, boy they were good.

You could possibly throw Holy Cross in the mix if you are looking at the complete body of work. 64'-65' they lost in the state finals, 71'-72' they lost in the state quarter finals, and in the 90's they were at state twice. Correct me if I am wrong. The only thing that overshadows these accomplishments is the fact that they have been a .500 ball club since the 90's. And the fact that they are in the 34th district with Holmes does not help them in reaching the state tournament in the near future.

While Ashland isn't as dominant as they once were, I feel they are still seen as one of the top schools in the state.

We played that 89' team at Holmes in the 9th Region tourney and we shot poorly in the big gym, in fact I think I was 2-12 or something dont wanna remember. Scott didnt play very well either in that 1st round game but went on to win the Region. IMO if we would have put together a normal game we would have knocked them off in the 1st round. You would have probably seen Holy Cross go on and win it that year then. They were loaded with the Houston Bros. McClendon, B.Pouncy,etc.

Sorry, Clark Co. is NOT a top program in the STATE for the past twenty-five, thirty-five, or fifty years. As friedtaters stated they weren't even the best team in their DISTRICT in the 90's. Montgomery Co. absolutely OWNED them. I'd say that Estill Co. was as big a threat back when they were all in the 40th district together. I know we, Estill, always KNEW playing Montgomery was way tougher than playing Clark. Only since Clark Co. has been getting Fayette Co's overflow have they been a real contender in the 10th. My family has know Coach Strong's family for too many years and he will admit that he had some nice teams but he wasn't a powerhouse. Remember, this is the last twenty-five years, not the past five to ten. Clark Co a top program: funny. And if you want to talk about being in tough regions like the 10th, which has only Mason Co. to call a yearly contender, what about the Louisville schools in the 7th region that have to compete yearly with each other. Currently you have 7 teams in the 7th region rated in the top 20. Now that's tough! You could take those seven and move them to eastern KY and almost all would make the state tournament yearly so can we call them top programs in the state? According to your reasoning Ballard, J-town, Easter, Trinity, St. Xavier, and Manual are all top programs in the state. Wait a minute, now I may agree with you. Tell Clark Co they can come play in the 6th or 7th or 11th region if they are tired of being in the loaded 10th.

They lost in the 79 regional championship to Highlands in a very close game.

Everyone can make their arguments their own way, but if we go to 30 years, Holmes has played on Saturday five times (finals in 78, 90, and 08 and semifinals in 80 and 07) - I don't think any Ninth Region team even approaches that kind of state tournament performance. Just haven't been able to close the deal - don't want to jinx anything so I won't make any references to this year or next.
