If WKU has a practice field with Field Turf, the pre-game warmups could be performed on the practice field, thus allowing the games to be run faster with 30 minutes between actual games instead of 90 minutes like it is scheduled now. Some of the pre-season extravaganzes are run this way, and I for one like it because you don't wait so long between games, that is if you are there for all 3 games.

I think the added distance in Bowling Green may help create more of a "Championship Weekend" atmosphere, especially for N. Ky. teams. I can see N. Ky. fans and some Louisville fans staying in town overnight and watching more than their team's game. If Bowling Green is smart, they will build this into a travel package type weekend for people. Create a big tailgating/hospitality area that will lend itself to mixing and mingling, perhaps in an adjacent building that is big enough to hold a crowd. Part of the attraction at the Sweet 16 is seeing those people from around the state every year. Bowling Green needs to create that. If I were Bowling Green, I would make this the biggest weekend of the year in town and make it an event people will attend even if their team isn't in a title game. Put that Super Bowl type hype into the entire weekend. How about this...a post game rally hall where the teams and their supporters can assemble after their game to celebrate? There is a lot that can be done to make this weekend so much better if someone in Bowling Green really takes the ball and runs with it. Man, I am getting excited thinking about it. I wish I lived in Bowling Green and could get involved with planning this weekend! It could be a total blast.

I really think the city of BG will go above and beyond expectations with this. The town doesn't really have anything else going on like the Ville does. Expect for the community to really rally behind this and make it very special for all involved. And with it being on campus, expect to see a lot of the local college kids to show up. I think attendance will be up from this year at PJ

I have to agree with those who favor a 2X2X2 setup for the games. It allows for more time to thoroughly enjoy the games, allows for better crowd/traffic control issues, allows for better efficiency by those working the games and will make the championships a more "special" event for those involved.

If you want the football finals to be an event it has to be a 2, 2, and 2 format. BG needs to demand it, otherwise, people are going to zip in, and zip out.

 

3 and 3 is way too much football in a short period of time.

 

Finally, I don't want to hear any garbage about the supers not wanting to miss another day of school. If that is the case they need to trim back all the days they allow both the boys and the girls to miss for both the Sweet 16 and the All A.

The 2-2-2 format is a win-win situation for everyone. Bowling Green will have people in town for a longer time, with more hotel business and dinning and there will be time for shopping for the people that are inclined to do so. Plus, I think it would help the attendance. I would say that many people left in previous years after two games, most people just do not want to watch three football game at one time.

I agree with your thoughts completely. But as Kissinger pointed out, until there is a change in the Superintendents' thinking, it isn't going to happen. Everyone supporting the 2-2-2 format needs to contact their local Superintendent and push them to push the KHSAA to make the change. If the Superintendents tell the KHSAA to change the format, it's likely to happen. The KHSAA would still need to make sure the field is available a third day, look at the associated costs of an additional day, etc. But until the Superintendents tell the KHSAA they are in favor of a three day championship event, the KHSAA isn't (and shouldn't given the Superintendents' current position) going to initiate any action. I'd like to think that given the ever increasing popularity of high school football in Ky, with enough "pressure" from football fans on the Superintendents, it will eventually happen. But people have to start contacting their Superintendents now and keep pushing them.

I agree the superintendents have a lot of say in it. But, it should be a priority, to make the Championship weekend into a bigger event. With two games a day, there would be more time for other events to go on, it could be a big event with a lot more hype and participation by the fans and others in attendance.

And you do it well my friend. I continue to feel like the Ru does. The Supers come across rather hypocritically when they permit the Sweet 16 to occur over several school days (doesn't the All A Classic also occur during school days?), yet they argue against the football championships being spread out over 3 days because they don't want the students and coaches to miss another day of school. It's kind of like being opposed to racinos coming to Kentucky when you voted in support of the lottery. Just one of those inconsistent positions that makes people shake their head.

 

 

I know Highlands is a football school but KY is a basketball state and the Sweet 16 is the "Greatest show on Earth" according to its marketing material. This will never change. Maybe they can make the changes Ru is proposing because I agree 3 games in one day is too much.

Market the games for a change. The KHSAA goes above and beyond marketing the sweet 16. The dates, times, etc. are pushed well in adance of the event and tickets are presold to students, parents, and the community at large. Why don't the football championships receive the same push? BG or the KHSAA needs to step up and try to bring football fans to the games not just the parents and students from the competing schools. IMO this is what makes the Sweet 16 so successful, this spring look around Rupp you will see many HS basketball fans not just factions from the competing schools.
