No sour grapes here- just some relevant facts. Since the selection process is loaded for offensive players, maybe it is time to have a offensive and a defensive player of the year.

Duece, I believe played for a Catholic Grade School in New Albany, Indiana who participated in the CSAA football league. I think it was St. Anthony, and it is a bit funny he is from Indiana and MR. Football of Kentucky.

It is also a bit funny how sensitive X fans are about this issue. Kind of like, "yeah, we know its crazy that our best player lives in another state." Rather than admit it, we'll just blast anyone who brings it up as being hateful or jealous. I have NO doubt that Deuce is a great young man from a great family. I have NO doubt that he is an excellent football player. Finally, I have no doubt that it is, as many have said, a bit "funny" that Mr. Football in Kentucky lives in Indiana!

It is fine to make a sarcastic remark but at a kid? Also the comment came from a T fan and I would find it awfully hard to believe that a Hoosier has never suited up for T. Just glass houses thats all.

But a Hoosier intercepted the pass in OT last year in the Kentucky State 6A final for Trinity. Did any reporters bring that up in the newspaper article. No, because it wasn't important then but when Deuce wins Mr Football...

Jason Frakes mentions that he is from New Albany in his article. Just like THS Rock has[/u] to mention it under this thread. So what is bigger-the state final or individual awards? I think most of us agree it is the state final.

Is there anyone on BGP that didn't know Deuce grew up in Indiana?

 

What bothers me is Deuce has had to carry this collar that he is from Indiana, similar to the basketball players from about 10-15 years ago that used to be the Proposition 48 players, who didn't qualify academically freshmen year but based on grades, were admitted because they played basketball. Many became good students but were still referred to as Prop 48 players their senior years. If you Google Deuce Finch, you get 56,000 hits. If you cut out the rivals.com and scout.com hits and read the articles about him, almost every one mentions him as an Indiana resident in it. Did LARRY TAUGHER get that much press when he played in Indiana because he grew up in Kentucky? Deuce is a fine young man who has carried this perceived albatross as well as a person can.

 

As to whether Tim Phillips deserved this award, I certainly believe he deserved to be at least a finalist. If anyone has certain knowledge, was he nominated for the award or do you have to be nominated? Did the nomination of Jordan Whiting( probably the best defensive player without question) hurt TP's chances to be voted in because the perception that JW may be a better player so you can't vote for TP? I really don't know why someone who has dominated in the playoffs and regular season can't make the top 10 unless he wasn't nominated. I will beg to differ that he faced stiffer competition because he never faced Trinity! Now if anyone wants to make the argument that other teams were better than T....!!

Ohio passed a rule several years back that does not allow an out of state player to participate in high school sports. Quite a few N. Ky. athletes were playing in Ohio but not anymore. I remember a Cincinnati Moeller team in the 70's that was considered the best in the nation and had a half dozen players from N. Ky. It had become an issue in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo and the state changed the rule. I don't think it is a big enough problem in Ky. that the rules will be changed.

They tried to pass the rule about 2 years ago and it failed. I'm OK with the rule as it is now.

 

I am a bit surprised that mentioning the irony of a Mr. KY Football trophy sitting in an Indiana living room causes so much angst. How does it take anything away from this tremendous athlete? Whomever tried to compare this to kids being labeled "prop 48" has lost perspective.
