The Cov Holmes vs. CovCath rivalry has been a huge basketball fan favorite for years and years and years, but the Holmes student body over the years has been very, very weak on cheering, so it really isn't much of a cheering student body vs. a student body rivalry.

 

Now if you are talking student bodies vs student bodies cheering, then the HHS vs CovCath is the best and anything else in the Commonwealth, isn't even close...

 

My guess though is that Mr. (Death) Rowe will in no uncertain terms be telling the CovCath students body to tone it down to a civil manner this year, and I hope that the HHS administration will be doing the same thing!

The CCH-Holmes rivalry usually draws the biggest crowd of any other game in nky. You don't see the Holmes student section really get involved though until districts and regionals. I'd bet that the Holmes-CCH rivalry has probably drew the biggest crowds of the year the past 4 years in nky. The game ALWAYS sells out at CCH and is close to capacity at Holmes.

 

Really looking forward to the match up between these two in two weeks at CCH.

Really, there were barely any Highlands students at this game in BOK center. Do these two meet again later on in the season?

Most of the big rivalries in the mountains and south east KY are when you have a small city school vs. the county school. Most of the times these teams are seperated by less than a mile.

 

Somerset/ Pulaski County (about 3 miles and route 80 seperate these schools)

Danville/ Boyle County (less than a mile from one another)

Pikeville/ Virgie (in the 80's)

Paintsville/ Johnson Central (seperated by a creek)

Hazard/ Perry County (in a previous thread they were talking about police being outside, when these teams compete in ANYTHING police are in the stands) (check out youtube from last year, lol)

 

Another amazing thing is that most if not all of the city schools are "A" schools (by older rankings not the new 6A system) and the county teams are all 3 or 4 A teams, but it never mattered when it came game time, the smaller teams won just as many if not more of these rivalries.

Not even close? Maybe in football, but in basketball when CCH plays NCC or HC there are just as many if not more students.

I don't see why we're talking about student sections in a thread like this. In a lot of the rivalries listed, it's because these teams just really don't like eachother.

IMO its not as much fun when the gym isn't packed with two schools/students who don't like each other. I think that helps make it a great rivalry.

I agree. Which is why I said the Holmes/Covcath rivalry was probably the fiercest rivalry in nky since it ALWAYS sells out at CCH and is near capacity at Holmes with not only supporters of each school, but also fans from all over nky who very much get in to the game.

Holmes vs Cov. Cath. They met in the last two 9th region championship game.

It adds so much to the rivalry when the kids at the school don't like eachother. Like it was said before, I would rather be at a game sold out with students than random parents filling the seats. To me when the students get up for the game it seems to add to the play of the players.

Which goes back to a previous thread. I think students are charged too much to get into games! I think student sections should be FILLED for every game. This is what makes rivalries great, THE STUDENTS! Not us old farts!

No doubt that Holmes versus CCH is the biggest rivalry in N. Ky. because of the longevity. Holmes vs. CCH was the game to be at before HHS even knew basketball was a sport. I think it would be hard to match this rivalry anywhere in the state in longevity and success of the two programs over the past 40 years.
