Too Many Sub-500 Teams In Playoffs

Featured Replies

My ONLY concern about week one of the playoffs is the chance of freak injuries or heaven forbid, a cheap shot. I am not arguing either way, just food for thought. I love the debate and reading other people's ideas. I think it is sad how many sub .500 teams are in the playoffs, but thats the way it is.

That is strickly a product of the 6 class system. Go back to the 4 class system and most of this goes away.

Exactly.

IMy suggestion is to go to a two-team format (champion & runner-up). Either that, or not allow sub .500 teams into the playoffs unless they competed in a very tough district, & their record was 5-5 or 5-6. In either case, weed out the rest of the losing records, & give the district champion a bye, especially in the case of four-team districts.

Are you kidding? You do realize what you just mentioned allows for a controversial opinion from someone to decide if a team played in a tough district or not. No way!

I can remember back in the 80's when Rockcastle County had a fine team, yet they played Cawood, Bell County and Whitley County in their district. They would always beat one of those three but end up losing to the other 2 by a few points each time, they just couldn't get over that hump. I would've loved to have had another chance at one of those two in the playoffs or since the other district was weaker play them and advance. 2 teams is a bad idea for KY Football.

Sad, sad, sad. I cannot believe that sub .500 teams are alowed to compete in the playoffs. Ohio football fans just scratch their heads. When Art Schlister was in High School, they were 40-0 and never played 1 playoff game. This is because the teams they played were not that good. They needed to beat quality teams to earn points to get in the playoffs. Maybe we can look at a similar system.

That system is just as bad if not worse. Top two teams in each district should go.

When you limit the football teams, you'll need to find a system for every other sport in Ky. since in every other sport every team is playoff eligible, regardless of record.

I played with a couple guys in college who lost 3-4 games their entire HS career and never made the playoffs in Ohio. I couldnt believe it, but it was b/c they were in SE Ohio and didnt have the SOS or Points to make it. Crazy IMO

Edit: Not to mention KY doesnt have nearly the amount of teams Ohio does.

Looking just at 5A: If you took just the top two teams in each district, the number of teams with winning records would jump from (18 of 32) to (14 of 16).

Central had a 5-5 record last year going into the 3-A playoffs, I'd say they finished up pretty well.

Well, like I said, then go to the champion & runner-up format, & leave it at that. I'd be interested to see how many 3rd or 4th seeds from districts made it to a regional championship, or further. When I played at Russell in the mid 80's, you had to flat out win your district or you didn't go. We had Belfry, Johnson central, & sheldon Clark in our district & it was fairly tough.

I totally agree Doc. Here's the problem; the KHSAA is simply making more money by allowing four teams out of each district into the playoffs, similiar to how the NCAA expanded from 48 to 64 teams, which waters-down the competition. My suggestion is to go to a two-team format (champion & runner-up). As for Ohio's system, I don't particularly care for it simply because it's ridiculous to have teams with good records not even making the playoffs, especially undefeated or 1-2 loss teams.

The KHSAA does not put their hand in the kitty during the playoff games, so it's not the same scenario.

So, does that money go strictly to the schools involved & nowhere else?

Yes, the KHSAA only gets money from the Championship game.

Everyone that argues against the sub-par or winless teams always says the same things:

1.) Something about "cheap shots"- Could this not happen in week 2 - 5, also?

OR am I missing something and all sub-par teams are just looking to ruin someone's health/career?

2.) Something about Injuries- Can happen in any game at any time. Get rid of week ones bad teams and only play above .500 teams, and the chance for the same injury is still right there.

I really don't see either of these as a problem contained to "frustrated" bad teams. I also can't see an epidemic of 3-7 or 0-10 teams going out and saying "Well, we can't win, but do your best to break some legs!". The 0-fers will thin out fast, but if a team loses to one, they were not ready for a run, anyway.

From a different posters I read something like this;

Oaky if you want football to be treated like basketball, baseballl, soccer, volleyball, etc. then limit football to only one state champion! Football, now has six state champions....all the above only have one!

It is indeed silly to have a team make the playoffs and not win a single game all season long! Now if you want football to have a sweet sixteen tourney like basketball, baseball then shorten the football regular season and go at it.

I think having only the top two/three teams in each district move on, makes the regular season mean something and is the way to go.
