When Art Schlister was in High School, they were 40-0 and never played 1 playoff game. This is because the teams they played were not that good. They needed to beat quality teams to earn points to get in the playoffs. Maybe we can look at a similar system.

Oh yeah that would be awesome. Lets keep out some 10-0 teams so we can say there are no 0-10 teams in the playoffs.

 

Why don't you people just ignore week 1 of the playoffs and get back on board week 2? Week 1 is like week 11 of the regular season only the KHSAA schedules it for you.

Ohio's system sucks because it leaves off too many deserving teams and it is too subjective to criteria out of your control.

 

Kentucky lets in too many underserving teams, but that problem solves itself in 1 week.

 

I'll take our system over theirs any day.

Think about this. Let's use Trinity as an example. There are 4 teams in their district...Trinity, Eastern, Ballard, & Seneca. That leaves Trinity with 7 none district games to Schedule. Let's say their schedule were to look like this...

4. Cincy Elder
   
5. Eastern
   
6. St. X
   
7. Ballard
   
8. Cincy St. X
   
9. Seneca
   
10. duPont Manual
    
11. Cincy Colerain
    

Let's say Trinity won all of their district games and beat Louisville St. X but lost to the others. That would put their record at 4-6. Do you feel they shouldn't make the playoffs?

Guys, wait a minute. Everyone wants to complain about our playoff system and I just brought up a different side, such as Ohio's playoff design. I am not trying to offend anyone, just brought up a debate question.

 

Where were all you playoff supporters prior to today on all the threads bashing the way we do things here?

How many times are we going to start threads on bad teams in the playoffs, 0 win teams in the playoffs, sub standard teams in the playoffs, too many teams wearing red in the playoffs, etc.?

Nothing is changing and the world is still holding it's course. I do not want to see the playoffs cut down to only the district winners or 10 win teams. The first week can be somewhat bad, but if you are playing an overmatched team, maybe you can use it to get ready and work on some things against live competition. PLUS: sometimes the ner-do-well team scores the upset and makes things interesting. What would the NCAA tourney be without the teams that got hot late and made runs? Things are fine how they are!

I know at Rockcastle County, I felt it was a true playoff rivalry with district 8 each year, Lawrence County, Greenup County, Sheldon Clark, Ashland, etc but then the KHSAA went intra-district and it was awful.

 

Round 1 games are just as intriguing if you are a real fan. Not too mention the extra practice time and exposure these playoff teams are getting making the entire state of Kentucky's football better because of the extra practice time and motivation, confidence of making the post season.

My ONLY concern about week one of the playoffs is the chance of freak injuries or heaven forbid, a cheap shot. I am not arguing either way, just food for thought. I love the debate and reading other people's ideas. I think it is sad how many sub .500 teams are in the playoffs, but thats the way it is.

Here's more food for thought. Don't all teams make it to the playoffs in other sports, like Basketball and Soccer (even when their records are terrible)? I guess a counter argument to that would be to say that serious injuries happen much less often because of the nature of the contact in those sports.

 

Those other sports' setups seem to take the mentality of "week 1 takes care of everything."

I totally agree Doc. Here's the problem; the KHSAA is simply making more money by allowing four teams out of each district into the playoffs, similiar to how the NCAA expanded from 48 to 64 teams, which waters-down the competition. My suggestion is to go to a two-team format (champion & runner-up). Either that, or not allow sub .500 teams into the playoffs unless they competed in a very tough district, & their record was 5-5 or 5-6. In either case, weed out the rest of the losing records, & give the district champion a bye, especially in the case of four-team districts.

 

As for Ohio's system, I don't particularly care for it simply because it's ridiculous to have teams with good records not even making the playoffs, especially undefeated or 1-2 loss teams.
