Too Many Sub-500 Teams In Playoffs

Featured Replies

WE need more classes. I think there were a couple of teams in the state that did not make the playoffs. Better book Dr Phil!

I disagree. Deserving teams? The fact that a team may win a couple of ball games and play a bunch of weak opponents shouldn't qualify them for anything. Yeah, Ohio's sytem isn't perfect, and I'm sure those that felt like they should have gotten in are complaining about THEIR system. But, at least they're not dealing with winless and losing teams qualifying for the "playoffs".

No system will ever please everyone, but I do believe that Ohio’s system can be a bit too stringent in some cases. For example, last year Waterford, a division 6 school which is equal to class A in Kentucky, went 9-1 and missed the playoffs. I understand that it was their strength of schedule that prevented them from making the playoffs, but as a division 6 school you can only play teams of equal or higher enrollment, so in this case they would have had to play teams much larger in size and beat them to make the playoffs. I’m sure there are other cases, but this is just one example that I know of from experience where a good team with a good record was on the outside looking in come playoff time. However, I completely agree that a system like Kentucky’s would not work in Ohio because of the number of schools in Ohio, but I don’t think Ohio’s playoff system is suitable for Kentucky either.

Waterford, from what I was told the staff knew they had to go 10-0 to make the playoffs becasue the schedule was weak at best.

After losing in week one talk was they were going to miss the playoffs, and the talk was correct.

Go to the WV. type system.

Computer rankings(Massey) and 16 teams make the playoffs. 3A would be like this -

1 Belfry

2 Central

3 Breathitt County

4 Estill County

5 Mason County

6 Elizabethtown

7 North Oldham

8 Butler County

9 Russellville

10 Sheldon Clark

11 Western Hills

12 Wayne County

13 Russell

14 Union County

15 Taylor County

16 Shawnee

Go back to the 11 game schedule and maybe combine the Massey rating and the Maxpreps rating and I'm in.

I agree with at least a .500 record. Boyle Co. plays Pendleton Co. in there first round matchup who haven't won a single game this year. This game won't even make for a decent gate.

How my 3a playoff pairings would look. What do you think?

reg 1 1Central vs 4Union County

reg 1 2Butler County vs 3Russellville

reg 2 1North Oldham vs 4Taylor County

reg 2 2Elizabethtown vs 3Western Hills

reg 3 1Breathitt County vs 4Wayne County

reg 3 2Estill County vs 3Harlan Co

reg 4 1Belfry vs 4Russell

reg 4 2Mason County vs 3Sheldon Clark

Higher seed is home team.

Region1-2 play and 3-4 play in semi with higher rated team hosting.
