Minimum wage problem

Featured Replies

I can't believe what I'm reading. It's almost as if we are living in mid-evil times, and the few nobles that are left forbid to give anything to the peasants. Let them eat cake.

You would have a good analogy if this country were made up of only the Wal-Mart and Exxon Mobiles of the world. For smaller businesses, it is simply not the case.

Maybe, but I don't think it's going to fair too well to these poor people who have to work two minimum wage jobs to barely squeak by when their boss tells them, sorry, you can't get a raise, your suffering and low salary is needed so rich people can live better.

Apparantley not even the last Presidential administration.

Or the next.

The difference between mid evil feudial times and the present, is in America today, every one has the opportunity to be a noble if they are willing to work hard and take advantage of those opportunities. However, you can't screw around in high school or college and not take your education seriously; you can't be an irresponsible teenager and get pregnant or get a girl pregnant; you can't get messed up on drugs or hang around with the wrong crowd; you can't party all the time and just have fun, and then expect to become anything other than a "peasant" dependent on the nobles to take care of you.

Educators on here and elsewhere lament over and over again how way too many kids and their parents don't take their high school education and college seriously. Then they graduate and because they can't read beyond an 5th grade education or because they don't have the necessary math skills, they are ill prepared to get a decent paying manufacturing job or even get into college. As someone involved in economic development, I hear over and over and over the problems companies have in finding employees with even basic level skills. I know that companies are shying away from N. Ky now because their is a dirth of qualified employees for them to hire (and we are talking about manufacturers looking for employees to run CNC operated machinery and other semi skilled jobs). Jobs that high school graduates could perform if they took their math classes seriously in high school; jobs that pay $20 an hour.

I'm on several NKU affiliated committees. I hear President Votruba and professors talk about how totally unprepared a lot of college freshman are for college. In many cases, they have to take in effect remedial college classes to get them up to speed just to do college level work.

Why should high school graduates not be able to have decent reading and math skills and be able to perform semi skilled jobs? Why should colleges have to spend time and resourses educating frosh just to get them able to take college level frosh courses? I don't blame the high school teachers and administrators. I blame kids and their parents for not taking high school education seriously.

If people don't want to be peasants they should control their own destiny and do what it takes to not be a peasant. Stealing from the nobles to give to the peasants is not only wrong, very wrong, it provides the exactly wrong message to kids. Further it disincentivizes people to want to be nobles if the end result of them working so hard, making the sacrifices and taking the risks to be a noble will only result in their hard earned gains being taken from them and given to the peasants not willing to do those things. If a person's lack of education makes him or her unqualified to do anything other than a minimum wage job, the problem is not with the amount of the minimum wage, its with the person that failed to get a proper education and is now stuck in a minimum wage job.

We are going to see if the concept of taking away a higher portion of the nobles money and handing it to the peasants will work. I don't think it will, but we are certainly going to see.

So you believe that increasing the minimum wage that drastically in a 24 month period will create more jobs and curb inflation?

Excellent post. Basically, you earn the rewards based on your willingness to work or to improve yourself. :thumb:

Obama wants to raise the minimum wage to $9.50 by 2011 and then index it to inflation.

If this happens small businesses will have to raise prices on their products and pass it on to the consumer, and lay off some workers. They will have to make up their losses someway. So, imo nothing is gained by this, except maybe for the workers that are the lucky ones that aren't layed off.

What happens is that the raise in the minimum wage will cause all other wages to increase porportionally.

Why?

Currently, an entry level assembly position pays more than minimum wage, but only 2 bucks/hr more. Once trained, that position increases a dollar/hour. To attract the employees we want, those wages have to increase at the same rate as the minimum wage. Now consider the employees, who's pay grade is one level up. That wage must increase too, to keep the entry level rate from overtaking it. And the next pay grade ... and so on ... and so on ....

See the ripple?

Therefore, the amout passed on to the consumer is MORE than the increase the minimum wage, so the net effect is a reduction in real income to those who the minimum wage is supposed to help.

Be very careful. It sounds as if you are calling for taking responsibility for yourself, not blaming all your problems on the world. The liberals will rip you to shreds.

Once again, go get some training to better yourself. Unions are supposed to have apprentice programs to train people fer better paying jobs.

You have to improve yourself, the government can't do it for you and raising the mimimum wage is not the answer either.

Also, aren't most union contracts tied to min wage? Would the union workers automatically get a bump if the min wage increases? I may be off on this but seems like I read/heard that before.

Hey, it doesn't hurt if you never had to work a day in your life and was born into tons of money.

Paris Hilton's certainly done a great job of that.

I can see another Will Smith movie in the making as we type.
