not 100% sure but i'll bet plenty of kids go to cov cath that don't live near there. they are a private school who can get the pick of the litter if they want. if a kid doesn't want to play there they can just throw a fit and cause what we're seeing now???

If those 'plenty' of kids move to go to Cov Cath then that is fine, but if they decide to play sports then they will have to face the same dilemma. Anyone can transfer for academic reasons and none of us would even know about it, but if they suit up in sports gear then it matters.

Guru. The way I read the rules you posted. It states that all games will be forfeited except the state game. Doesn't that in a since say it is ok to do wrong to make it there then something will be done about it. Did that make sence.

This is just sad for the kids. I am not particularly a Highlands fan but those boys worked just as hard as any other team and this game this weekend means the world to them as it would any team. I don't know the story behind why he was declared ineligible in the first place so I will refrain from talking about something I know nothing about. From what I have read here, he was declared eligible at one point knowing it was temporary. The coach took a chance and played him knowing at some point there could be trouble from it. It sounds as if this game will go on whether Mitchell plays or not but this game will be tainted whatever the results and that is a real shame for these kids who have busted their tails all season. I am not familiar with the KHEA and the way they work but one would question the timing of this.

No I didn't forget. You ask a ? and I thought I answered it. Yes I know these are kids. What about the kids that fill they have been cheated? I have no dog in this fight. But some people want to blame the KHSAA for all of this and they ultimately were not responsible for all of it. It is my understanding that the Mitchells kid transfered to have more of a chance to play on a team to get more college attention. That is wrong. The coach new this might happen and he played him anyway because as someone stated "he was doing what was best for the Kid". I find that somehow hard to believe. Coaches do this to win..Period..

But if in fact he is ineligable and they have to forfeit all the other games how can you still be allowed to play for the state championship, unless of course you had to forfeit that game too. So Highlands could be 1-11 or 12 and still be the state champions, that a bunch of crock. I dont know if I fully understand the situation that way, but it would be absolutely ridiculous. Taking nothing away from Highlands but if you have to forfeit all games then there's no way you should be able to win a state championship. I know this wasn't seen in the future, but if you let someone play with someone ineligable all season and then tell them at the state championship, what kind of message does that send. Either way I dont blame Highlands' all that much, I think it was lousy management by the KHSAA.

Sydsam, I think the rule says it won't apply in state championship competition, meaning all the playoff games, not THE state championship game. Someone said 3 pages ago KHSAA wouldn't cancel a state championship game and lose the gate. This makes no sense as a rule, but is their board's way of saying in advance they won't cancel a championship game. Coincidentally, they won't lose the gate. From the point of view of guidance to a coach or team making a decision, the message is make sure your injunction sticks through the regular season. If it does, you're in the playoffs and won't be sent home. If it's dissolved in the last week of the season you forfeited all your wins (that the player took part in) and can't go to the playoffs. No lawyer can predict the Court of Appeals docket and timeframes well enough to play this game. Certainly, no one wins under this ruling (for the reasons others have posted).

If Mitchell's declared ineligible, I really don't see how Highlands can play in the state championship game. I understand it's in the rules as posted by Guru, but that doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense to me. So.......get a court injunction from now on and make sure the case isn't heard until after the playoffs start? I can understand Highlands staff standing up for the kid from the beginning, BUT if the governing body declares him ineligible, you are taking a huge, huge risk by letting him play. If I'd have lost to Highlands in the playoffs, and they later were ruled to have used an ineligible player and were allowed to move on that would be just plain wrong.

I'm not sure the KHSAA could have done much about it. They declared the kid ineligible, then a court of law slaps an injunction on the ruling. What are they supposed to do, just give up and not pursue it?
