Top 5 8th grade school teams in the state!

Featured Replies

Are you sure about Knox Co. that high because they played GMS last year at the KBA only won by 10 or so and GMS isn't even the best team in their school district.
Meece played four of my top 10 teams and Knox Central was the best of the four. Teams can have an above average game or a below average game. Maybe that happened in the game with GMS. All I can tell you is they are a solid team if that same team is playing this year and none of the players are moving up to high school ball.

McNabb Middle has a pretty solid 8th grade group. I don't know where they might be ranked, but they have won a lot of games over the past 2 years.

Doesnt Mcnabb have the kid that played for the VILLE? Lanky kid who can shoot the rock. They also have a big fella on the blocks. They will be solid as well. Nice addition to the mix.

The lanky shooter is Omar Prewitt. He comes from good stock (Lea Wise is his mom).

Big kids on the block are Tanner Combs and Blake Preston.

Another player on this team who comes from good stock is Tuttle. He's a very nice player and his grandpa is one of Georgetown College's all-time leading scorers.

There are other very good athletes on this team who are fast and play hard.

That's why I am looking forward to the Knox - Scott County game in December at LexCath .....

McNabb does have a nice team .... but I was hearing that Omar probably would not play with the middle school, that he would be moved up. They will still have a decent team without him, but with challenge in the Bluegrass Conference with him. Preston, for one, has improved every time I have seen him play. But, from what I understood when I saw him as a 6th grader, it was some of his first exposure to competitive basketball so he was really raw.

1. Scott Co.

2. Christian Co.

3. Knox Co.

4. Wayne Co.

5. South Laurel

6. Russell Co.

7. Lincoln Co.

8. Hazard

9. Mayfield

10. Madison Middle

This is assuming these teams have not had big changes in their line up. But, we won't know until we start playing.

I heard a lady talking about Wayne County yesterday and she said that they have an eighth grader who is almost 16. Is this true? I'm sure somebody knows. I know that kids being held back is normal these days, but when they get to this age, there is a big difference in strength and athletic ability than a "true" eighth grader, IMO.

I was just wondering what we are up against next week when we play Wayne in our FIRST game, lol. Nothing like hitting the ground running...........

Wayne Co. is legitimate. None of their kids will turn 16 until the next school year. The same group of kids have been playing together the last 3 years. Shelton is their player and he is strong! :thumb:

I think it's funny what some rumor floats around about some kids. I'm sure that there are some instances where these sorts of things may be true. Typically I think that someone makes a statement in total sarcasm that is overheard and spread as gospel. Having seen Lincoln previously in a couple of games last season, I'd be surprised if Wayne wins. Can't wait to hear the outcome.

What is his size (ht/wt) and position? Give me a little scouting report, ha ha!:D

I think if they have kids who are currently 15 or turning 15 this season they have a huge advantage over most 8th grade teams. Im sorry but most 8th graders are either 13 going on 14 or just turned 14 yrs old.

Anybody who can drive a vehicle their freshman year has a legitimate advantage over most other kids in that class.

Remember, when you get to the state middle school tournament, it doesnt matter how old you are to be quite honest. You can be 16 in the 8th grade and it doesnt matter. You might not be able to play your junior or senior year in high school but I know a few local schools who have kids these ages and they unfortunately end up quitting school and never finishing anyway. Its like they play their high school ball in middle school and its very sad.

16 year old freshman? Wow.. I was 16 as a junior..

Shelton could end up starting on the varsity at Wayne this season. Lincoln has no answer for him. Shelton's grandfather is Wade Upchurch who played for Monticello and EKU. He later coached at Garrard County and took Monticello to their last state tournament. The kid has great size and strength, a high basketball IQ, a motor that never quits, and is very athletic for his size.

Schools should mandate that if kids turn 15 before August 1st they are inelgible to deter kids that old from playing, most conferences already have these rules in place.

If they turn 15 before Aug. 1 of their 8th grade year, then by the time they are seniors they would be ineligible per KHSAA rules. So, I agree that rule should be in place. No reason to be eligible in middle school if you can't play as a senior in high school.

Having said that, I very doubt the Shelton kid or many kids have to worry about this. You would have to be held back 2 years in most cases for this to come into play.
