November 8, 200817 yr Clinton Co moved to 5-0 tonight in 8th grade boys with a win over Pickett County. The Asher kid that moved in from Indiana is as good as anyone I've seen and I have seen most of the kids discussed on this board. He will be an absolute steal for some AAU team this summer. His potential is the most impressive thing, he's just scratching the surface. I would say he is averaging a point a minute through 5 games. He plays all 5 positions at different times but he is probably a 2 in the long run. southernkyhoops," is Clinton County, playing in the Mc Creary Central or Northern Pulaski, tournaments. November 8, 200817 yr With shoes on (they just measured all the players the other day), my 8th grader is 5-8, 117 ..... The good news on mine is he already has a 10.5 shoe so plenty of foot to grow into. :jump: I was watching them practice the other day and a friend of mine mentioned how much longer the kids get from 7th to 8th grade. Not many put on weight but they do grow longer in that year span.
November 8, 200817 yr By the way, 5 games is amazing to me. My son's middle school team has only had 4 practices and you guys have already played 5 games. How many will you end up playing by the end of the season? Highlands has had maybe 5 or 6 practices and most of the practice time is spent doing fundamentals and teaching. I dont think they have done hardly any scrimmaging at all. Coach Vories is doing a great job and the kids are learning a ton.

November 9, 200817 yr Author We usually play to the east but this season we are in Warren East's and Bowling Green's tourneys. We want to see how we match up in region. The Bowling Green area teams are very athletic and we don't see that much athleticism with our schedule. We will be playing in the KBA state tournament this season but we are not a threat to win it. I'll tell you a little more after we play Russell and Wayne. Both beat us about 20 last season so it will be a good measuring stick for our improvement. It's tough to win at that level with 2 6th graders getting 15-25 minutes a game. Asher is a grade exception, I think he turns 15 in March. He can really play, he will probably be practicing with the varsity this summer but he would be a good pick-up for any of the really good teams. He is the best player, by far, that I have seen so far this season(limited). He is about 5' 11", 170 and can grab the rim with 2 hands standing flat footed. Our football team was 0-3 and won 5 of 6 to with him at quarterback to close out the season. He is an exceptional athlete. We play alot of games early and then play about once a week in the 2nd semester. A total of about 30. Alot of our kids are pulled up to play Freshman or JV ball starting in December.
November 9, 200817 yr So do you attend practice? I catch the tail end sometimes but my info mainly comes from my son. Also i watched how the coach handled his team last year because they played after our boys and he is a true teacher of the game.
November 9, 200817 yr What's the difference in that and AAU or Freshman teams? They have their own state tourney.. Not much difference. I find it silly to rank the top freshman teams. It is not the like Varsity actions where teams are seen by many more people. Plus it is not a true state tournament.

November 10, 200817 yr Author I agree, next season it is being sanctioned by the Kentucky Coaches Association with regional tournaments and a state tournament. Plus most of the teams that are outstanding in the 8th grade, end up being sweet sixteen teams down the road. And lastly, it gives dad's and coaches a place to talk about the sport they love. You would not believe the comradery between parents that developes over time. I really enjoy hearing about other kids success. I am always trying to help kids that want to play basketball improve their position and play for better teams with more exposure.

Well, I'd guess that most, if not all, teams have a couple of tournaments away from home and it's made able by the schools. I won't buy that excuse frankly. Mayfield is 4 hours from Lexington and they still go. They are a far cry from the wealthiest school in the Commonwealth. However, they have a team that they believe can compete for a title and they plan on playing from day 1. IMO, not every school puts that type of effort in their program, not to mention, most think that they couldn't compete if I were to guess. I'll suffice to say that I think that the better, if not the very best, middle schools in the state will be attending.

I disagree, I don't think that most MS teams travel far away for tournaments. they may play in tournaments but not overnight tournaments. Not all HS teams travel on overnight trips because of the costs.
