October 31, 200817 yr In NKY, some of the better 8th graders are playing up (i.e. Monroe, McClendon and McGovney) so the 8th grade teams will not be as strong. Look for Twenhofel, Highlands, Summit View, Campbell County and Gray (Ryle) to be pretty good.
October 31, 200817 yr I probably wouldn't put Meece in the top 5 this year (previous years, yes). Without Gover they are still a pretty good team, but not top five. I would put S. Laurel in the top five. I would also think Knox Central would be in there somewhere.
October 31, 200817 yr Author Forgot about Gover, your right. Played South Laurel last year without Sanders, wasn't really that impressed with his supporting cast. I have never seen Knox Central. There has to be some good teams in Louisville, I am just not familiar with them at all.

Scott County beat 2-5 in the state last year on the way to the title. The only easy win was over Meece, only because SC was a lot more physical than Somerset. I wouldn't put them in the top 5 with Gover (although I am also not discounting they have a nice team) and obviously definitely not without. The toughest games SC played last year were the other 3 teams listed above and Madison Middle. Knox got beat by Christian County in the state last year (Scott County plays them at LexCath early in the season) and don't forget about Lincoln, who made the Final 4. I didn't see South Laurel play last year, but I think they gave Wayne a decent game in state even without Sanders, so I am not sure I agree that there supporting cast isn't much. And, who's knows what is out there in Louisville. Those teams don't seem to play in the state in 7th grade, but last year in 8th, Crosby won the title and a couple of other teams from there competed. Bottom line, I think you have to say Scott County would be the pre-seaon No. 1 only because they won it last year and none of their kids are moving up. But, after that, I think you could throw Russell County, Wayne County, South Laurel, Knox, Lincoln and Madison in a hat, shake them up and come up with 2-5.

October 31, 200817 yr I'm trying to tell you guys, Mayfield is pretty darn good. You'll see. When they get Jonathan Jackson back from an ankle injury, they will be talented, relatively tall, very deep. I can't wait until the MS State tourney, they're my sleeper pick along with Lincoln.

I saw your comment on them in another thread so that is why I put them in my preseason top 10. If you can, keep us posted on their progress throughout the season. How is their seventh grade team.

I believe the KBA will try to slot the top teams from last year into different brackets, but then you would have some sleeper teams nobody has heard knock off some of those teams. I knew Scott County had a good team last year, but I never thought they would win the state title.
October 31, 200817 yr Now try and give the top five for 7th grade. Very difficult in my opinion, but give it a shot. LTMS should be pretty good. They finished 2nd last year in 6th grade (I completely understand entries for 6th grade was way down last year), plus Jordan Green has moved from Sayre to there this year. (Actually, LTMS's 8th grade team could be a sleeper as well if McFarland plays with them this year -- heard some rumblings he might just play at Dunbar.) Sayre, who won it last year, will be way down because I am hearing their top players are all moving up the ladder this year as Sayre's program is awful. (I am not trying to take anything away from Cunningham or Johnson, but they wouldn't move way up at most schools). Scott County -- with Portwood -- should be able to compete. A Barber kid from Rose Hill is supposedly going there as well, although I have no idea if he is any good. If I remember correctly, I think Elkhorn had a pretty decent 6th grade team last year. I know nothing about any teams from southeastern KY, other than I know Meece has some good players in 7th grade.

Last year Highlands drew LTMS led by McFarland and his 10 swats a game and then had to face the best team in the tournament Scott Co led by Richardson and the two sharpshooting guards Page and other name slips my mind. They must have hit 30+ 3 pters in that state tourney. Not that Highlands would have contended because to be quite honest they played horribly and were not playing competetively at all. However, with a better draw they may have won their first game and it could have kickstarted a better performance. I think draw is very important most definitely. From what I gathered from the thread last season and what I saw at the state tourney here is my top 5. 1. Scott Co - simply due to Richardson staying down. Portwood and the rest of the bunch are all very good and they shoot the rock exceptionally well. 2. Christian Co- very athletic. 3. Wayne Co- 4. Lincoln Co. 5. Russell Co- however I understand a couple of their guys are moving up. Meece is always well coached and they play as a team very well. They are outmanned physically though at times and without Gover they will be solid but not Top 5. Looking forward to seeing Mayfield. Spindoc usually knows what he is talking about. :thumb: South Laurel will be interesting too with Sanders. He may be the best PG in the 8th grade this year with Monroe and Gover not far behind.
