This was my thought in the thread asking about Obama and no one seemed to really want to answer it. Why are most Conservative Christian's overly obsessed with things like abortion and gay marriage at the expense of things like helping the poor.

 

One of the biggest things we as Christians can do is help those on this earth. In Mathew 25 Jesus said "how you treat the least of these is how you treat me." It just seems to me it is for God to judge individuals on their homosexuality or abortions. But it is the responsibility of us Christians to help those who can't help themselves. Love and service to me should be the main focus of Christians not judgment. Remember Jesus served others around him and hung with some who were considered the worst of the worst as far as sinners go of the day. But he loved them just same and did his best to serve them and better their condition. Why should we be so quick to judge others, that is for God. However, what is for us is to serve others and help the helpless.

It isn't, but how many conservatives are for the expansion of social services and welfare? I doubt HT721 is making a direct correlation between the two subjects.

What makes you think that conservative Christian's don't care about helping the poor? I do not understand why we can't hate sin that is destroying our nation and love poor people at the same time. I try to do that. It has been proven that Conservative Christians give more money to help the poor and suffering than any other group. On the other hand, it is not compassion or love to enslave people to a welfare program. I do not believe we are responsible to take care of those who want to lay around and fornicate, and have babies just in order to draw a check.

 

The most caring, loving, and giving people I know are those who others would refer to as, "right wing", or "radical right", or "Conservative Christian". Some of the world's greatest and most compassionate organizations were started by Christians, such as, The Red Cross, Salvation Army, and even the first hospitals.

 

I know there are those who think it is a great thing to rob the rich and give to the poor. Its not that I'm against giving to the poor, I just don't like Big Gov. trying to do it because those that benefit the most are the politicians who have the nerve to vote themselves pay raises in the middle of the night.

 

I know this is not going to answer all your questions, and I don't intend on trying because I have more to do than spend all my time on this forum debating these issues.

I have said it before and I will surely say it again- the day that I became a conservative was the day that I began to believe that the free market was the best thing for the poor.

Alright, lets look at each of these through scripture and logic, and hope that the two are not mutually exclusive :thumb:

 

Where does Jesus talk about Hating the Sin and Loving the Sinner. Is it not possible that the two are so intertwined that you do harm to the sinner by hating the sin? Life of the mother . . . healthcare for lifepartners - if you deny these because of the sin, you are harming the sinner.

 

What do you mean by loving poor people? Does it mean that you are trying to change the system that creates poverty, or does it mean that you satisfy that part of the scripture by giving to charity so that someone may eat a couple of hot meals. They are still poor, their condition has not changed and the system we leave in is not designed for their success.

 

I have kids in my school, whose mother is the manager of a fast food restaurant. As manager, she makes about 22,000.00 per year. As a result her kids receive "free/reduced" lunch. They are no enslaved by welfare, they are empowered by it b/c they don't go hungry. Most, if not all of the kids there have parents who work hard and just aren't making it . . . they are solid individuals but they need help. They are not enslaved by welfare, they are enslaved by a system that would pay a manager of a restaurant 20,000 and basketball star 40 million (free market baby). It is unjust and a poor system. The system also pays people who FAIL at running companies 40 million dollars and charges 40% at payday lending stores to people who can't afford, it is unjust.

 

Where does Jesus say "we should take care of the poor, well wait a minute, only those poor who deserve it."?

 

Where is anyone "robbing the rich". It costs money to live in this society, to provide security, and infrastructure. Those that can afford, with the least amount of harm to them shoud pay it. Others should benefit from it.

 

Who else can provide health care to children, the elderly and the impoverished if not the government? Have churches started setting up their own health insurance programs and providing care for entire communities? Has anyone been doing this?

 

I know conservative christians do give a lot of money, but are they attacking symptoms with that money or are they attacking the system that creates the wealth gap? Which is more important?

As for gay marriage, I have my personal opinion, but I don't ever rail on about this because I think there are much bigger fish to fry. Besides, it doesn't seem to be an issue in this campaign as both campaigns have said they are for all gay partner rights but not for gay marriage.

Forced charity by government is not voluntary, therefore is not an example of Christ's love. It really is as simple as that.

 

Conservative Christians give exponentially more to charitable causes than any other group on the face of the Earth, as has been pointed out in this forum time after tiresome time.
