This isn't as big of a deal as some want to believe.

 

After speaking to several of the coaches on Conner's staff, Dayton-Belmont isn't exactly a powerhouse that will force them to pull out all the stops. Several key Conner players will not play at all and it will be primarily JV players playing in this game.

 

As far as the kids playing on friday night, you will not see the varsity for more than one quarter. Expect the varsity to come out and get an early lead in the first quarter and from then on it be strictly JV.

If they are going to play two games, I think the smarter thing would be to have both on same day. See if you can get NCC game moved to early Saturday, and then maybe push back the next game an hour or two later than it was suppose to be at. Yeah I know after a game, people are usually drained, I know I was. However it would be a lot easier to get back up for game later that day, then the next day when all the soreness really kicks in. I know I honestly would have loved doing it. I know its not something you can do every week. But as a high school student, I know I would have loved the thought of two games in one day once.

 

Obviously you would still play your JV, but if you would have to put your Varsity guys in. They probably would have an easier time doing it, than if it was the next day.

When will the Equipment Manager have time to wash the uniforms?

I would be the same way strap up boys and lets play.

How do you even get to this point? Contracts are signed and exchanged months, sometimes years, in advance. The AD and/or coach didn't notice they had 2 games schedule on the same weekend? Unbelieveable.

I know what the issue is ... and it would probably be a little smarter to point the finger at the state of Ohio (who made a decision in regard to how their in-season weeks are classified this year) ... as opposed to any coach OR AD.

I'm guessing it has to do with both teams scheduling a game for week 8. Week 8 in Ohio and Kentucky are different (and almost always are), correct?. Do football contracts not have dates? What did Ohio do and when did they make the change? Like I said before, how do you even get to this point? I'm seriously wondering how this happened because it appears that they didn't cover their bases in regard to scheduling.

This is true. The blame could certainly be all on the Dayton team. Like I said, how do you even get to this point?

No matter how you spin it, this is bad...

 

1) If you play your JV, you're costing your varsity kids game experience prior to the playoffs. (If you told any coach that they'd only have 9 games this year when everyone else had 10, they'd have a fit.)

 

2) You're also costing your JV kids a game of experience because they can't play NC on Saturday. (I'd go ahead and schedule it for Monday, at this point what will it hurt?)

 

3) Most of the football coaches I know and that's quite a few, DESPISE getting thrown off schedule. This does that, to say the very least. You've added a bye week. When you should be lifting, running, and watching films on Saturday you're playing another game. When do you bring them in for films? Monday? That takes away from your normal schedule, even if it is a bye week. Sunday? That's a lot of football.

 

4) Football is a game of preparation. Every coach wants to go into every game fully prepared. A wise coach once told me that, "You can't treat one game like the Super Bowl and another game like a scrimmage. They're all important." He's 100% correct.

 

I'd rather take the $1000 (or whatever the contract says) penalty then play back to back.

 

I see your point however, is Highlands ill-prepared for the playoffs when they beat a team by 10 TDs and play their JV for the majority of half? Do the Varsity players suffer that much? If you use this rationale no coach would let their JV play an entire half in lop-sided game, but this obviously does happen at times.

I partially agree, however the varsity players aren't expected to play a game the next day too.

That makes a lot more sense. In that case, I certainly hope they tried to find another game in one of their two bye weeks. It's unfortunate that they'll basically miss out on one of their 10 Varsity games this season.
